It would be interesting to see if such limits spur new types of productivity to spend that time optimally

"New types of productivity" is an interesting thought experiment.

Front derailleur: On higher-end bicycles, it is becoming a rarity with single narrow-wide tooth front rings. To make up for this loss of gear, rear cassettes have gotten wide and wider reaches (bigger big cogs and smaller small cogs.)

Most places I've been call the seat a "saddle."

I love the hand drawn style so much, by the way.

A non-suspension fork is ok for 95% of people and likely cheaper than a matching frame, less material and a simpler shape.

Also - my suspension fork is 20 years old, has never had maintenance and is working fine. What do you do to yours? :)

(Or maybe my fork is NOT fine and I just don’t know it…)

mc3301 · 10 days ago
A fairly common story for people with a fork that has never had maintenance:

1. "It works fine" 2. Get a shop to rebuild it for a surprisingly low fee 3. "Holy smokes, I had no idea my fork could be this good!"

Basically, a quick rebuild (yourself or a shop) is definitely worth it.

It feels like there’s some kind of Party Train opportunity here, similar to a party bus.
mc3301 · 13 days ago
They do this in Japan occasionally. I've been on (officially organized by the railroad company) beer trains, wine and cheese trains, local food-tasting trains, etc. Last time, it was like 5,000 yen. All-you-can drink local beer, 2 hour round-trip with stops along the way where local mayors would hope on the train for a quick "hello" speech. Trivia quizzes, bathroom stops at stations (with perplexed-looking late-night commuters), souvenirs for sale... Good times!

Absolutely you can. The places in France and Spain I've flown to just suggest you bring your own pedals, so they match your shoe cleats; they'll fit them before your hire. You can usually bring your own saddle too. It's far more convenient than bringing the bike.

I've also done it the other way, my main bike has S&S coupling so I could bring it aboard the Eurostar. For touring I prefer my own bike, because I have the racks set up for my panniers, but when I do that, I prefer travelling by ferry/train.

mc3301 · 13 days ago
I love it! Even for the lift/shuttling-bike-park crowd, I bet many places would happily install cleat-matching pedals (or your own), your saddle... maybe your grips if you are picky?
mc3301 commented on Steam review from Japan were overwhelmingly negative compared to other languages   twitter.com/Shinjisan_XD/... · Posted by u/seventhtiger

Translated tweet text from Japanese gaming Youtuber Shinjisan:

"I checked out the reviews on Steam now that you can see them by country, and I noticed that for almost every game, the reviews from Japan were overwhelmingly negative compared to others. (China and Japan seem to be particularly harsh.)

However, when I read the content of the negative reviews, many of them were surprisingly reasonable. Upon digging into the reasons, it seems like people in Japan tend to leave negative reviews to voice complaints, but they don’t bother leaving positive reviews for games they enjoyed. In short, it just looks like harsh ratings due to a lack of positive reviews. (Giving a negative review to something you didn’t find fun isn’t necessarily a bad thing.)

Steam’s review ratings often impact game sales, and because of Japan’s harsh reviews, some developers apparently avoid Japanese localization during early access or initial release to avoid getting reviewed at that stage.

What I’m trying to say is, if you get into the habit of leaving a positive review—even just a short one—for games you enjoyed, game companies might be more inclined to support Japanese localization sooner or treat us more kindly (⋈◍>◡<◍)。♡. I’ll keep up my habit of leaving positive reviews for fun games whenever I remember to do so. Best regards."

In my observation, reviews (in general) are different in Japan. Look at something simple like google maps reviews of restaurants or clinics. The bad reviews are often extremely personal and not really representative of what most people would experience.

"I really didn't want to speak with anyone or make eye contact, but the staff cheerfully greeted me and seemed to want to talk to me. One staff even looked at me from behind the counter while I was drinking my coffee." >> One star

That's such an edge case though.... what about my fine tuned piano? Or my aquarium? At some point personal luxuries don't have to be accommodated for
mc3301 · 14 days ago
Even as an avid cyclist who fully understands geometry and the personal connection one may have to one's bike, I agree with you.

Privileged enough to fly somewhere specifically to ride bicycles? C'mon, I think you can find a good enough bike to rent when you get there.

I could hardly believe it, but I've witnessed multiple men trying to navigate the mean streets over there in Hummer H2s. They were all driven by the Japanese equivalent of "Deano" if that makes any sense: young, hair immaculately coiffed and dyed orange, brash and oblivious. We like to view Japan through the lens of tidy urban utopianism, but this guy seems to exist in every culture.
mc3301 · a month ago
The difference is this:

At a mega-crowded beach during peak season where people come to party and hooligans like to show off, let's say Izu's Shirahama for example, there'll be maybe a dozen of such big stupid trucks in total. And that's throughout the 10 or more huge (and full) parking lots.

For fun reference:

Ford F150

width = 240cm

price = starts at 8,000,000円

__

Kei Truck

width = 148cm (maximum by law)

price = top model 1,600,000円

Ban the stop and go hell of rush hour. Cars rolling at freeway speed without stopping pollute way less than drivers stuck behind idiots who can't just go forward down the road at the speed limit.

The human suffering and ecological impact reduced if only there would be a focus on enforcing speed minimums...

mc3301 · a month ago
It isn't just slow or distracted drivers. It is congestion. It is too many cars, and the impossible task of making them all "go" at the same time.

What we need is fewer cars and better shared transportation.

Heck, we should replace ALL cars with busses, and then they could go super fast with all the other buses. Make 'em small, so it's maybe 20 people per bus. That's 20 cars off the road, right there.
