maximus-decimus commented on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection   spectrum.ieee.org/age-ver... · Posted by u/oldnetguy

Shouldn't the verification be other way around? That is, you need to prove that you are a child. Then the site can present you more strictly filtered content. Parent can sign child's device on first boot, token stored in TPM so that it's hard to remove.

It's basically the same type of enforcement on sites, as they need to verify and filter content for children, or just block them. Most of the internet users are adults, why not make internet for adults by default.

So you want porn on every web site and have kids prove that they're kids by issuing their school card (because they won't have a real id yet) so the porn get hidden for them or so they get entirely banned from the system?

Nobody's ever gonna show an id to get banned from a website.

I use a different email address for every service. About 15 years ago, I began getting spam at my diversalertnetwork email address. I emailed DAN to tell them they'd been breached. They responded with an email telling me how to change my password.

I guess I should feel lucky they didn't try to have me criminally prosecuted.

Every single time I order from KFC, I get an e-mail by a hot girl in my area. You think I can sue them for free chicken wing buckets?

This discussion thread is very specifically about the US vs China, however.

And his point is that's a false dichotomy.

It was recently in the media that old Tesla’s are now worthless once the batteries are dead and that this is happening now.

Heres one such source but theres hundreds if you care to look: https://min.news/en/auto/2a2636e0ac962b5d94ee68babcd09a3d.ht...

13 years old dead luxury cars are worthless, yes, especially when the tech is quickly evolving. That doesn't say anything about how long it takes for them to die or how reliable the tech is.

believe it when I see it.

no car you can buy with this longevity tech, no phone either- same issue.

maximus-decimus · a month ago
The Tesla Model S has been out for almost 13 years, so you can already see it.

Your phone doesn't have liquid cooling temp management and is probably recharged daily. With a car that has 300 miles range, a lot of people probably only do a full cycle every week.

I currently hold some Vanguard ETFs. Any tips on similar broad “world economy” type funds that don't use dollars?

VEQT is made of what, 4 underlying ETFS? You could just buy the 3 index funds that don't follow an american index and balance yourself once a year.

Because they are. Have you ever been to a Costco?

Costco has to be the most well loved stores, it's a strange one to pick to make arguments against grocery stores.
maximus-decimus commented on Org Mode syntax is one of the most reasonable markup languages for text (2017)   karl-voit.at/2017/09/23/o... · Posted by u/adityaathalye

The value of Org outside Emacs would be the same value that Markdown has, if it had wider adoption. Voit's post makes a strong argument for Org syntax's ability to serve for all the things Markdown currently does, while being more consistent and concise than Markdown, and so he pushes for it to be more widely adopted. We know that in tech, the better format doesn't always win at first, or ever, but we can advocate!
maximus-decimus · 2 months ago
org-mode is just much more complicated to implement though and just contains so much. it's also a todo app. It also lets you run code like a python notebook. it can show you your tasks in a calendar.

I've used "org-mode" todo apps on android, but people complain they can't really use it because it doesn't implement everything.

The advantage of the core markdown syntax is that you know it works everywhere and it works everywhere because it's small and easy to implement.

In every other case, in every other industry, we call people who buy a limited resource, transform it in no way, and sell it at a profit a "scalper".

For a long time I thought, "maybe landlords are offering some service and not just squeezing people...." But over the past decade it's become clearer and clearer how predatory and parasitic the industry is. Things like this. Things like landlords all using the same pricing algorithms so they can raise rents in unison.

maximus-decimus · 2 months ago
Even grocery stores fit your definition of scalpers.

But this is even more different because they don't even sell the housing to you, they rent it to you. The service they offer is that you don't have to have capital to buy a house and you don't have to maintain it and if you move, you don't have to sell it and pay sales taxes.

meanwhile my BYD stock didn't go up... Hope 2026 this will change.

For China, this is ultimately a good thing. BYD employs a large number of workers and has factories in many developing countries such as Brazil and Central Asia..., creating numerous job opportunities. Many of BYD's factories in China are located around non-first-tier cities, where workers may earn only around 5,000 to 6,000 yuan. However, considering China's extremely low cost of living and deflation, this salary is sufficient to support a family and drive more consumption in the market.

The stock market is forward looking. If people already expected that BYD would sell 4.6M vehicles in 2025, it was already accounted for in the stock valuation. For the stock to go up in price, they need to do even better than people expect.
