Disney was Hewlett and Packard's first customer in 1939, or was at least among the very first. The 200A oscillators were used to calibrate theater sound hardware for presentations of 'Fantasia' (although https://www.hewlettpackardhistory.com/item/a-deal-with-disne... says the Disney versions were designated 200B.)

Does it look like the one in the photo on that site? Sounds like a very cool artifact. You can't always tell much from the serial number -- for example, notice that they started their model numbers with '200,' just to make the company look bigger and more reputable.

Interesting HP/Disney history! My unit looks similar-ish. Photo of the front:

200A sounds interesting, as that was their very first model number. Your relative didn't have anything to do with Disney, did they?

Not that I know of. Why do you ask?

I rescued an HP-200A audio oscillator from the basement of a relative who’d passed away, thinking it looked interesting. Anyone know if it has any value? I’m guessing it’s nothing too special with a serial number of 30211.

My upgrade to Monterey (MacOS 12.x) broke my Canon D530 printer driver. Re-installing the driver didn't help. Now I have to print to a PDF, copy that to an old Snow Leopard 10.6 machine, and print from there. FYI, Snow Leopard is 11 major OS revisions behind Monterey. Printing worked fine in Mohave, 3 major revisions ago.

I also can't write any files to /, even with SIP disabled, and during the Monterey upgrade, Apple deleted all files and directories in / that they didn't recognize, including my system backup. I had to recover that from Backblaze. Can't say I'm a fan of recent MacOS. If you think you are in control of your Apple machine, think again.

Doesn’t Snow Leopard have printer sharing? i.e. you can skip the generate PDF and copy steps, assuming both machines are on your LAN

I nearly failed out of college my first year due to obsessively playing ranked online games of Myth and Myth II.

I still fire up the game on my Linux workstation from time to time. It bums me out that nothing like it has been made since. I would absolutely kill for Bungie to buy back the rights to the franchise and have a go at modernizing it.

You may be interested to hear that community developers [1] have updated Myth II to be run on modern systems (even native Apple Silicon!) with a variety of enhancements to the game client itself and other goodies like hi-res map textures.

There's also a community metaserver to replace bungie.net. [2]

Is this a joke about how the top comment on the HN post for dropbox was just "hmm don't see the point it's just FTP". Are people really doing this again?

If anyone likes looking at these visuals but doesn't have a windows pc, you might enjoy this web-based milkdrop port able to work with your mic as a sound source: https://butterchurnviz.com/

I've been having fun putting together living room DJ sets with visuals driven by Acid Cam or Project M on my mac, but neither of those are really made for real-time VJing so i usually just pick a preset at the start of the set and stick with that. I'll have to set up my webcam and OBS on a PC to play with this. Thanks for sharing!

Cool stuff! I did some experiments with pre-rendering Milkdrop visuals for high-res uploading to YouTube which might be of interest to you. Not practical for realtime (I guess this is where OBS comes in), but pre-rendering is great for quality. Example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyhisYKU2Dg

Some notes on the process: https://www.markneuburger.com/prerendering-music-visualizati...

Led to a side project called pasteur, a tool for baking visualizations into MP4 videos for sharing: https://www.pasteur.cc/
