lucasban commented on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app   xdaforums.com/t/discussio... · Posted by u/Magnusmaster

A rooted phone is more capable of modifying the banking app itself and has 'freer reign' over the APIs that the app uses to interact with the bank.

Whereas previously the app displays a 'whitelisted' set of UI options to the user, the rooted user could use employee only methods. Somewhere or other every bank has methods that set balances on accounts.

To be honest a law like this makes security by the extremely modest obscurity of not having an "increase your balance" button on the app UI much more tempting.

This should be enforced by the backend, why should you ever trust the client to tell you what access you have?

Phone either, I’ve moved countries and no longer have access to the phone number I signed up with. I was hoping they’d address this before that number came up for reassignment but maybe not at this rate.

And stop asking for phone numbers for "fraud prevention" when I've already given you my name, address and credit card.
lucasban · 3 months ago
The fun one for me is that I moved countries and last I checked there’s still no way to change your phone number on ChatGPT short making a new account, so now my account is associated with a phone number that I no longer have access to and will eventually be reassigned to someone else.
lucasban commented on Dark mode by local sunlight (2021)   ctnicholas.dev/articles/d... · Posted by u/gaws

Strong disagree here. Many apps don't implement dark mode in the way I want. They seem to think dark mode is for conserving battery life on OLED displays and make the majority of their UI #000000. That's not what I want. I want a subtle shade of grey. I'd rather choose light mode for an individual app if that app doesn't implement dark mode correctly.

Another point is that some types of content just don't work with dark mode. Maps for example. I have used multiple apps that use maps or present data on a map. None of the maps look good when dark. As such I always turn off dark mode if an app displays maps as part of its main user journey.

My understanding is that white on pure black can be troublesome for people with a certain level of astigmatism as they will experience halation, which can make things appear blurrier.

Syncing dark mode or f.lux or OS night mode to local sunlight is nice if you live near the equator, but for folks living in the far north, it actually makes seasonal changes so much worse.

Let the user decide the schedule, please.

lucasban · 3 months ago
I believe most OS that have an option to do this by location also allow for manually specifying the schedule

One thing also to keep in mind, is that this experience is not uniform throughout the US. Many Americans like -their- employer based insurance, even if they don’t like the system. I personally pay nothing for visits and nominal fees ($1-10) for prescriptions. I have not been hospitalized while on this insurance, but my understanding is that it is relatively low cost. I also have no monthly premium. Meanwhile, my mother works at a small business, pays a significant percentage of her income for insurance from the ACA marketplaces (the public marketplaces created during the Obama administration) with the current subsidies, subsidies that are in question under the current administration. The American healthcare payment system is broken, but we aren’t all living through the worst case scenario experiences that get the attention. Add to that the amount of money and effort that went into turning healthcare reform into yet another partisan issue, and there’s a good recipe for maintaining a broken status quo for a while yet.

For what it’s worth I did not experience this issue on my most recent overseas flights, but I also only wore them at full altitude

I wish it had a little bit more padding on mobile, but I agree otherwise

Does Android have it? Some Googling tells me it has third party apps which enable it but no built-in equivalent.
lucasban · 4 months ago
Yeah the closest thing I recall using is tasker but that relies on mostly private intents, the nice thing with shortcuts is it uses the same intents developers use for things like Siri Shortcuts so there’s first class support
