With the Android becoming a privacy nightmare, Pine was like the only hope for some FOSS phones. Their main drawback was the software. Now given the coding LLMs available these days, would generating a set of useful apps for Pine be a major problem? They can be pretty minimalistic but must be 100% reliable for the platform to take off. Right now they are super buggy and basic features work randomly.

I follow the ecosystem for two projects [0], and the app ecosystem keeps getting better. Also, there's always Waydroid (LineageOS equivalent of Android 13 in a Container) and Android Translation Layer [1].

The best way to experience #LinuxMobile is IMHO on former Android Devices like the OnePlus 6 or Pixel 3a, as these are well designed devices with SoCs intended for phones. While having native hardware would be great, it's really hard to produce relatively bug-free hardware from scratch. With mainline, the SoC is always going to be older, and small-scale production leads to high prices. The economics just don't work out for non-enthusiasts who then ideally are also up for paying a software support subscription. Also, as a manufacturer you'll want to somewhat control the experience, leading to 'yet another small scale device-specific distribution, which has it's downsides.

Across devices audio issues are unfortunately still somewhat common, in part caused by the Pipewire transition (things that had been figured out for PulseAudio need to be figured out again). But it's on people's radar, and funds are invested to solve this [2].

VoLTE is another challenge, as it allows to carriers to become more gatekeepy with their stupid device support lists - of course there are workarounds like using a SIP account, but that's too inconvenient for many. Also, RCS support is not yet there, but as long as SMS/MMS fallbacks are still around, this not a dealbreaker.

I looked into buying one a while back, and the spec sheet said it was using a 9 year old processor, and PinePhone uses a 13 year old processor.

It wasn't "discontinued," no one was working on it for years, and it was pointless to purchase.

The PinePhone is an outdated ripoff.

linmob · 13 days ago
"No one was working on it for year" is both untrue and unfair. There have been continued improvements (both PinePhone and PinePhone Pro), and I know that there are people who have put in the midnight oil to make them happen.

What that work was not is 'paid for by PINE64'. It's also not been enough to raise the bar enough to make the phone work well enough; but if you consider what's involved there, it makes sense.

You don't just need to write/fix a driver, you need upstream (or at least a distribution) to accept it and include it for that work to make a meaningful difference for anyone else.

Plasma Mobile didn't get far, but nice to see Plasma Big Screen progressing.
linmob · 2 months ago
It did not get far in market share, sure, but it never stopped going like Big Screen did and made the transition to 6 at the same time as Plasma Desktop.

Here are some recent developments:

1. https://plasma-mobile.org/2025/07/08/releases-25-07/ (also explaining that most software is part of 'Plasma Gear', which makes sense as it is software for both mobile and desktop, but has the downside of making Mobile less visible)

2. https://blogs.kde.org/2025/07/05/this-week-in-plasma-chuggin... and look for Plasma Keyboard in this post. (Personally I am a bit sad that they are seemingly abandoning Maliit, which is also used in Sailfish OS and Ubuntu Touch and is IMHO fine, but hey, at least it shows that Mobile is not dead.)

They could have been good, but they chose not to go down this route. This is one area Snap shines. Flathub rejects terminal only apps for this reason as well

linmob · 4 months ago
Yet, there are a select few non-gui flatpaks. One I use frequently is Zola [0], a static site generator that I use because it's significantly faster in building my site with 'zola serve' than the native Alpine Linux package. All I had to do to make it convenient was aliasing flatpak run org.getzola.zola to zola.

Do you even need https for static content?

Yes.

(For "social reasons": If you have any feedback channel on your static site, people won't stop breaking your balls until you add https.)

To me, looking at Ibis as a piece of software, it seems way more attractive as an alternative to wikia/fandom, niche wikis about a topic.

It seems to be selfhostable without massive resources and more modern, than, e.g., MediaWiki. (Also, say about Lemmy what you want, but using it feels lean and quick.)

It's especially attractive if the topic you are targetting also has some fediverse presence.

The SDM845 stuff looks quite promising for mainline but unfortunately the platform is definitely showing its age (and camera is still completely broken on every device as far as I know...)

Still, it's something!

linmob · a year ago
Not true for the Poco F1 (although AFAIK you still need to build your own kernel on postmarketOS to enjoy this): https://fosstodon.org/@joelselvaraj/112621744555315631

Shift6mq is supposedly close, with OnePlus6(T) its more difficult due to I think the way the sensor is connected.

Currently, the Pixel 3a is the most promising device in terms of Camera Support on a Qualcomm device with mainline kernel from what I can gather.

i assume it would do video over the usb-c port like the pinephone and librem.
linmob · a year ago
The FLX1 hardware does not support this, sadly (as very many phones do).

You can have a pinephone, and it will work fine for like 2 hours, warming like hell, and having you wait for minutes for an app to open. That’s where the linux userspace is. Maybe we should take a look at android and simply re-use the multi-million dollars spent on actually making a working mobile OS?
linmob · a year ago
While my experience with PinePhone has been significantly better (sounds like you may have had a faulty unit), we have working close-to-mainline ports for a few Qualcomm-powered phones (e.g., Xiaomi Poco F1, OnePlus 6(t), Google Pixel 3a, ...) in OSes like postmarketOS or Mobian. Turns out these work a lot better - having phones build with components for phones makes a significant difference.

It’s happening (albeit slowly?)

Librem 5 PinePhone and its Pro variant FuriLabs FLX1

Mobian UBPorts PostMarket OS And all the other distributions.

Still what’s really lacking is some kind of critical mass that can’t be ignored. Many many services even in real life are locked behind an iOS/play store wall (even sometimes with no alternative outside needing a smartphone).

We’re not completely locked in yet so there’s still time…
