Just false nostalgia memory.

20 years ago things werent any better. Software didn't consume gigabytes of ram because there was no gigabytes of ram to consume.

This is exactly the right way to think about it.

A classic if there ever was one, have read several times and will do again. After reading, I self-identify as high-prole.

I had The Print Shop Deluxe and remember thinking it was the future, and that we woull all be making our own holiday cards, signs, etc. in no time. Every holiday, I'm amazed that everyone I know (including me) is now back to using store-bought cards. I was surprised to just find out that there is a modern version, though it is Windows-only.

I remember the Print Shop as a kid! Yah I guess specialization won out. We don't even have to see our holiday cards now. Upload a photoshopped picture and mail merge and start getting compliments from friends and family a week later.

I own a few bespoke meteorite artpieces and my biggest concern with something like this is the smell! Muonionalusta meteorite in my experience has this pungent, sulfur-like smell.

I see nothing about the movement and suspect it's an off-the-shelf quartz or ETA movement. If you're looking for a true "high-horology" watch with a meteorite dial, that also has stunning movement finishing, check out Grönefeld: https://www.gronefeld.com/news/from-oldenzaal-to-manhattan--...

Can you say more on this? I didn't realize FAANG TCO was quite that high. Maybe it's time to swallow some pride and take the adtech money after all...

You don't start there, but you can get there as you level up. A lot of that would be because the stock on your RSU grants goes up while you work there though. I don't think many SWE have 7 figure targeted comp (highest levels, yes). But plenty get there with refreshers and stock appreciation.

I've never worked at a company where we were anywhere close to being able to A/B testing on customers. We just always shot from the hip. I think if you are doing that kind of testing may e you've run out of helpful ideas?

Talking to real customers and helping them solve real problems is really potent. And you can get more than just the color of a button. You can get the direction your company needs to go for months.

I think part of the problem is that science takes too long. It's like waiting for evolution to play out. You're company is at war with everything, entropy, the economy, your competition, the attention span of customers. Do you have time to science your way to success? Probably not. Do you have time to gamble on your intuition? Barely.

Collecting data isn't bad per se. But you should always be asking yourself if you are solving the right problems before you waste your time on it.

Much of A/B testing is far deeper than the color of buttons.

How much faster can we process payments through provider A versus B in different countries around the world?

If we offer insurance after checkout, do we convert more than offering it before?

What ranking algorithm of skus leads to the highest conversion?

These are insanely good, but there are still some things that just give them away (which is good, imo.) Like the Tokyo video is amazing, the reflections, etc are all great, but the gaits of people in the background and how fast they are moving is clearly off. It sticks out once you notice it. These things will obviously improve as time marches on.

The fear I have has less to do with these taking jobs, but in that eventually this is just going to be used by a foreign actor and no one is going to know what is real anymore. This already exists in new stories, now imagine that with actual AI videos that are near indistinguishable from reality. It could get really bad. Have an insane conspiracy theory? Well, now you can have your belief validated by a completely fictional AI generated video that even the most trained eyes have trouble debunking.

The jobs thing is also a concern, because if you have a bunch of idle hands that suddenly aren't sure what to believe or just believe lies, it can quickly turn into mass political violence. Don't be naive to think this isn't already being thought of by various national security services and militaries. We're already on the precipice of it, this could eventually be a good shove down the hill.

The saddest burrito in my life was when I had COVID. My doctor said I should take Zinc but that did not make it come back any faster.

I was cooking tacos for my family knowing I had COVID (we all had it at the time). I remember not smelling the seasoning, and threw a small handful of chopped raw onions in my mouth to confirm the bad news...

Luckily it came back in about a week. Beer and wine tasted awful for a few weeks, and I am a fan of both. Luckily a year on, and all seems well for now.
