You mean, they start practicing before learning the theory, or they learn the theory then start practicing :p
jjcob · 10 days ago
Sorry I got confused by the many meanings of practice :)

So I don't know what medical education is like in other parts of the world, but in Austria it involves a lot of practice. Doctors spend a lot of time practicing medicine under supervision before they are allowed to practice on their own. Specialists work as "assistant doctors" for a few years before they can open their own specialist practice.

It's not a question of theory or practice; you obviously need both to learn advanced skills.

Matrix may not be safe but is Wire going to be safe from Chat Control? Most likely no. So I don't see how trading one surveillance state for another will help.
jjcob · 24 days ago
When you're a EU company or a EU government it makes a difference if your supplier is subject to EU surveillance laws or UK surveillance laws.

As far as I can tell it comes down to:

- are you afraid of foreign espionage

vs.

- are you afraid of your own government

Unfortunately printers print in dots though, not pixels. There are printers with variable dot sizes, supposedly a thing with professional print, I wouldn't know - but nominally a dot is gonna be one of the four ink colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) and then it's either present or not present. I'm sure someone who didn't sleep only just one hour overnight can calculate you how many dots you need to cover the same gamut as a typical 24 bit SDR RGB pixel will.

My experience as a cyclist contradicts that: many motorists will still (riskily) overtake you just to reach the red light sooner. Some people apparently just can't stand to have anyone driving before them. See also: people passing by you on a multi-lane highway and then promptly slowing down once they have returned to your lane...
jjcob · a month ago
I don't understand this. There is a red light. You will have to stop. Why do people still cross a solid line (which will get you a fine if police sees you) to overtake me and then stop directly in front of me? It makes no sense.

It's even worse when they overtake me and stop in front of me at an intersection with two lanes where they could just stay in the fucking lane they used to overtake me.

I swear some driver are doing it on purpose because they hate everyone else on the road.

Surface level thinking, ecological disaster in the making. Birds and bats and other bugs eat mosquitoes to live. Killing all the mosquitoes is like the Chinese killing all the sparrows. We do not understand, and we do not want to understand, the deep consequences of our actions.

People who think we can reengineer and shape ecology by eliminating key species are here on the dunning Kruger curve.

Better option, if you really want to fight malaria go fight that directly, leave mosquitoes out of it.

In general I agree that messing with ecosystems sometimes has unpredictable consequences.

In the case of mosquitos, though, they cause so much suffering, that it would be stupid to not work on eradicating them because of possible negative consequences.

We have to be careful, of course (widespread use of insecticides is a problem), but targeted measures are really unlikely to cause more harm than mosquitos already do.

I don't live in the US, I live in Austria. Different country, same hypocricy.

Not sure if stuff like WERO will help.

I talked to a social worker who works with sex workers, and apparently a major problem they have is that local banks refuse them as customers.

Which is ridiculous. Why should a sex worker not be able to open a bank account?

This is literally the original use case for cryptocurrency.
jjcob · a month ago
Unfortunately that part never became practicable, and the only use cases that gained traction are speculation, fraud, extortion, and dark web marketplaces.

SEPA is not crap. It's actually pretty awesome, considering that you can instantly transfer money between 5000+ banks in 30+ countries, with practically zero fees.

The UX of SEPA is lacking in comparison to other modern payment systems for sure. I'm confident though, that it will improve soon. Wero [1] seems like a decent start and appears to be gaining traction lately. It's basically a layer on top of SEPA Instant payment with extra features and a decent app based UI/UX.

In austria QR codes for sharing payment info are getting popular. Many invoices have a QR code on them. You can then use your banking app to pay the invoice.

Banking apps can also generate a QR code for receiving payments.

They are not quite as seamless as tap-to-pay, but they work with pretty much every bank in the Austria, which is neat.
