All else will be forgiven if you have something of genuine value to present.

Remember - Stephen Hawking presented his findings. It wasn't his awesome presentation skills.

jascii · 2 years ago
That seems a bit counter-evidenced by the fact that he reached an audience much larger than his chosen fields. He had an unique ability to explain complex matters in a very concise manner, which is an awesome presentation skill in its own right.

You mean like reviewing the output? How do we audit a congressional staffer's correctness?
jascii · 3 years ago
Yes. What's the use of having standards for document handling and guaranteeing their correctness if we then feed them through a black box and accept its interpretation at face value.

Considering we have no real way to audit ChatGPT's correctness or security, I find this worrisome at best.

The flow of water was there before the concrete constructions were made, I guess?
jascii · 3 years ago
Not necessarily. It's common practice to built structure to control and redirect rivers around developments. That doesn't stop it from being a river.

First of all, I believe this should be called a canal, since rivers are naturally formed and canals built.

> Spanning a length of 114 kilometers,

Even the Mittelland Canal in Germany is 326km[0], so how it it the largest 'manmade river' in the world?

0. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelland_Canal

Being "naturally formed" isn't a requirement to be a river. Being gravity fed and naturally flowing is. A canal doesn't have significant flow.

Correcting someone’s language is not putting them down.
jascii · 3 years ago
It certainly tends to be perceived that way by the person corrected. It's also debatable whether nitpicking on someone's grammar is "correcting their language", linguists tend to think it's not: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal...

Just fyi, feedback is uncountable, similar to knowledge.

If you want to provide a number, you would say "2 small pieces of feedback"

jascii · 3 years ago
I think OP's meaning was clear as it is. No need to put someone down over a small grammar mistake.

A useful source was literally cited in the comment I replied to. Look at rankings of cities by crime. You will find SF and NYC close to the bottom of the pack on murders, but toward the top on property crimes and low-level violent crimes.

As to the ignoring crimes, here you go: https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/06/us/alvin-bragg-manhattan-dist...

So, "gangsters and other career criminals" stick to marijuana possession? That doesn't sound like a bad deal...
