Perhaps so that someone who found your iphone unlocked can't just keep using it and your iCloud in perpetuity?

jamescontrol · a year ago
I think he means, what causes apple to trigger those notifications. I don’t remember ever seeing that prompt, at least not without myself doing some action to trigger it.

> Endorse-ish: Schema migration by Diff

Well that explains it... What a terrible approach to migrations for data integrity.

jamescontrol · 2 years ago
Can you explain? Having a tool to detect changes and create a migration doesn’t sound bad? In a nutshell thats how django migrations work as well, which works really well.

This is one of two reasons why I decided to not try anything, ever.

1. What if it’s the most amazing thing ever, like ADHD medication, what if you get insanely productive, and you then have to go back to being mediocre?

2. What if it triggers something bad. If I get 10% worse at focusing on a solving a problem?

Nope

I'm assuming drug rings and other miscreants who are really motivated will always find a way to acquire guns like they do in every country with gun laws.
jamescontrol · 4 years ago
Less guns, less shootings, less gunshot deaths, it is that simple.

But how to get to less guns in a country like the US, that’s the real puzzle.

I really miss my old, old Kindle keyboard. It was the perfect form-factor for reading fiction, and the physical page turn buttons on both sides were literally perfect - holding the Kindle in either hand, the page forward button is in exactly the spot where my thumb wants it to be.

When the last of my old Kindles with the physical buttons died, I broke down and bought an Oasis, and... it's wildly better than a modern Paperwhite or a Kindle Fire, but it's pretty shittily designed from a usability perspective. The whole thing should be as thick as the offset thick edge, in order to hold it comfortably, and while it is nice to have physical turn buttons back, they're really awkwardly placed to use if you're trying to hold the thing in one hand and use your thumb, as one does with a Kindle.

I wish they would make a paperwhite with the long next page buttons on each side of the screen.

The only thing that baffles me is how he was be able to get his adsense account approved. Anytime I try to apply for one for one of my SPA web apps, I get declined due to "lack of content".

My guess is that if you have enough traffic, they will probably bend the requirements.

Uh i have a little experience with this. I was an intern for a few months as part of my computer science degree, and sitting at a desk very not suites for office work, caused my right hand to start hurtig and having issues with tingeling like you describe. What ultimately worked for me was minimizing mouse usage by stopping pc gaming, switched to console gaming instead and stretching primarily my neck and shoulders, that really worked wonders. I was tested if my arms/hands had any permanent nerve damage, and fortunately I had not. Let me know if you have any questions.

This is positioned to be competing product to netlify and vercel. However, it doesn't make sense to host it yourself as core benefit of host a static pages and node js apps on netlify is use their CDN infrastructure. It would actually cost you more to host self host it than using alternatives. Also this is definitely not a PaaS substitute. It is great attempt at a netlify alternative, but fall very short from being a production grade platform. Just an analysis, don't burn me please.
jamescontrol · 4 years ago
To be fair, it’s quite often more expensive to self-host software than to use the sass/pass equivalent.
