The Kroger by my house as these (or ones that look very similar). I generally avoid that store for many reasons, but I’m tempted to go there just to try this out. This is a few years old now; I wonder if they changed the tones.

They have not, at least in my region, it's a fun little party trick when I see a locked cart out on the sidewalk.

I think this is a Windows setting I enabled to get rid of annoying window animations, didn't know it could affect web pages, and I'm not sure I want it to :D

Well it's nice actually, but in this specific case I think I'd like to override it.

jackson1442 · a year ago
yep, it can be detected in JS and even CSS with a media query: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/@media/pref...

Depends on how the dev wants to implement it, usually when I'm throwing a small animation on a site I'll silently respect the preference and skip the animation without an override option, but for a site like this I'd expect an override switch.

I learn stuff when using these tools just like I learn stuff when reading manuals and StackOverflow. It’s basically a more convenient manual.
jackson1442 · a year ago
A more convenient manual that frequently spouts falsehoods, sure.

My favorite part is when it includes parameters in its output that are not and have never been a part of the API I'm trying to get it to build against.

Tangentially-related: I see postings for jobs specifically in states that require pay transparency (posting the pay range in job announcements), but they do not include a pay range in their announcements. While this is primarily an issue for companies that are illegally posting announcements without the required pay range, it might be helpful to include a statement in the rules at the top of the page. This statement could remind posters that if they are in a state with a pay transparency law, they need to include the pay range in their job postings.
jackson1442 · a year ago
Could also make it a site rule that _all_ jobs postings should include a pay range. Shouldn't have to waste your time applying to a job that has a pay range you would never accept.

I've found that face/retina scans are usually bad UX, especially if you need to use a viewfinder or a statically positioned device. Apple's Face ID works well because it's on a mobile device and you don't have to align your face in a box.

I don't see how this is any more convenient than using a mobile wallet. In fact, it looks less convenient than using the actual card - even if you forget the card you can usually just key in the number at the terminal.

I wonder if the biggest side benefit to a player like Apple getting into this game is the pressure it puts on web site developers to follow some kind of convention with their login forms. The vast majority of the time I have trouble filling a password, it's because the web developer did some wacky shit with the fields that make them unrecognizable, or in the worst case actively prevent pasting a password. It's one thing to blow off someone like 1Password, but Apple has a huge reach, they are not so easy to ignore.
jackson1442 · 2 years ago
I doubt this will change anything in the space. iOS and macOS (through Safari) has offered password management for years at this point. This is just a more flexible version of that system.

I think they finally changed this recently to allow you to paste in- I've resorted to the same workaround in the past though.

I know the common joke is that Google made a mess of their messaging apps. I 100% am not clear what the correct app is to be able to do tap to pay from my phone. Kind of comical how hard that is to figure out.
jackson1442 · 2 years ago
The best part is GPay also included a messaging component. It was close to feature parity with Google Allo.
