iwasakabukiman commented on PayPal faces lawsuit for freezing customer accounts and funds   engadget.com/paypal-lawsu... · Posted by u/I_am_tiberius

When a bank places a hold on a transaction or account for compliance review, the law state that those funds are to be held in an interest-bearing escrow account to be returned to the owner when the hold is lifted.

It’s illegal for PayPal to treat held funds as an overnight loan— that’s a gross misunderstanding of what is going on.

As many others have pointed out, PayPal goes out of their way to make sure they are not a bank.

For all framework laptop owners, I'm considering to buy this for myself this christmas. My previous laptop I owned are mostly MBP, laptop from work is mbp, and my own gaming PC.

1 of the reason why I like MBP is the sturdiness and build quality, but i'm ready to go on diy stuff and leave apple for my next laptop. I was watching Dave2D video but when I saw the spring of the hinge when opening the laptop and the flex on the screen, it kind a scares me. How does it go for all of you? How's the build quality? also how's the track pad compared to mbp?

I don't want to own a laptop where opening the screen with 1 hand feels like it's going to break it. Kind a feels like dell inspiron all over again

The build quality is excellent. It isn't quite as good as a MacBook, but I'm willing to take the hit from A+ to A- for the repairablity.

It's much better than any other laptop I've used aside from a MacBook Pro. The screen does flex a bit but unless you're actively applying torque to it, you won't notice. It's totally fine when opening and closing it.

Yes, MBR and BIOS have been on the way out for quite a while now. It's about time new stuff started dropping support.

And yes, the compat checker really ought to say why it doesn't like a system.

iwasakabukiman · 4 years ago
They recently updated it [1] so that it does tell you why.

OneDrive, Edge (if you're into it) and setting sync.

What do you mean it does not makes sense? I am not using MS login myself but saying it doesn't make sense is ridiculous.

It's exactly same as what Apple does.

As for people who say it's required on Windows: It's not. You can create local account during setup, the link is there once you cancel your online login. It's hidden at first, but it's there. You don't even have to disconnect your internet or anything like that. Shit move by MS (dark UI pattern) but it is totally possible.

I can set up and sign in to MacOS without using my Apple ID though.
iwasakabukiman commented on Five Oregon counties vote to leave state, create 'Greater Idaho'   upi.com/Top_News/US/2021/... · Posted by u/rmason

This article title is grossly misleading. As far as I can tell from the article, no actual votes have happened.

The group behind this is just pushing for counties to support them.

These types of groups pop up all the time, make hay and then disappear.

The old ATV 4k model already supports 4k at 60fps. The only improvement is that it supports HDR 4k content at 60 fps.

From the old spec page [0]:

   H.264/HEVC SDR video up to 2160p, 60 fps, Main/Main 10 profile
HEVC Dolby Vision (Profile 5)/HDR10 (Main 10 profile) up to 2160p
And the new spec page [1]:

   H.264/HEVC SDR video up to 2160p, 60 fps, Main/Main 10 profile
HEVC Dolby Vision (Profile 5)/HDR10 (Main 10 profile) up to 2160p, 60 fps

It can do 120 FPS, which is considered “high frame rate” for televisions. 60 FPS is generally considered standard.
iwasakabukiman commented on When Myanmar needs ProtonVPN the most, Apple stands in the way of human rights   protonvpn.com/blog/apple-... · Posted by u/ksec

There are many other VPN apps available in the app store, for example: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/1-1-1-1-faster-internet/id1423...

The issue is with the submitted app description. What is so hard to understand about this, just change the damn description to comply.

iwasakabukiman · 4 years ago
Agreed. They are trying to conflate two issues that are separate.

If Apple was blocking all VPNs from the App Store, they would have a valid argument, but Apple is blocking it for promoting accessing geolocked content in the app description.

That has nothing to do with the events in Myanmar. It’s just happening at a time when VPNs are extremely important for residents there. And as the parent comment mentioned, there are tons of alternatives.

> "I was, but when NeXT stopped making hardware they laid me off. A week later, Steve called me and started to say “okay Wayne, we need to...” I interjected “what do you mean we need to? You laid me off.” He said “oh” and then click.

>Eight months later I heard from my brother, who was still working customer support, “Steve wants you to call. He won’t call you but you should call him.” The result of that conversation led to working directly with Steve on all his most important presentations at Pixar and Apple for nearly the next two decades."

Steve Jobs' true skill was identifying great talent and leveraging them.

iwasakabukiman · 5 years ago
Another way to look at this is that Steve realized there was nothing this guy could do to help him at the moment, so he hung up on him.

I am speaking here as a hypocrite. I think porn is wrong and I don't pay for it on principle. I pirate it instead when I succumb to my baser urges.

What I'm saying is that I have mixed feelings.

iwasakabukiman · 5 years ago
So you disagree with it morally but watch it anyway? And then don't even pay the people who produced it? Isn't that even worse?

I think there's nothing wrong with porn in general and the people who create it - just like other artists, performers, actors, etc - should be paid for it.

Just because it's "morally disagreeable" doesn't make it okay to pirate it. Then you've committed two "sins" instead of one.

I'm pretty sure they're saying that Apple, etc. are trying not to offend China with their programming. It's unrelated to Gawker, but mentioned in the article.
