For someone who does not uses Chrome as a personal browser I am very excited.

I use Chrome only for development it this would probably help with the debugging problems, finding reproduction steps and writing website flows and QA steps much easier.

Obviously I would never use this on the browser with all my private sessions active as it is a huge vulnerability risk as well as not a fan of all my data being sent straight to CIA/Mossad.

I’d say it’s barely 3 things :

- The trackpad (but other manufacturers now have tolerable alternatives and anyway you can work without it)

- The screen : at an equivalent price point (and even more), nothing comes close to Apple screens. The cheapest MacBook have a better screen than most high end PCs.

- The audio : Apple truly did some sorcery to get such an awesome sound from machines that are flat as sheet. It’s so good that you can watch a movie on your MacBook without earbuds and don’t be bothered.

Everything else like build quality is overall better than most other alternatives but a few other manufacturers are also good at it.

I say this as someone who uses a MacBook for work despite loving Linux and who hates what macOS have become. The hardware is really that good.

It is my understanding that Apple did lock their trackpad tech behind a patent and that is why all the others suck. So it's really not their fault and it is very unfortunate if that's the case.

Here's an alternative I've wondered about: Instead of one person writing code, and another reviewing it - instead you have one person write the first pass and then have another person adjust it and merge it in. And vice-versa; the roles rotate.

Anyone tried something like this? How did it go?

Great idea, if you're fine with development time to take twice as long.

I really don't like this. This will inevitable expand beyond child porn and terrorism, and it'll all be up to the whims of "AI safety" people, who are quickly turning into digital hall monitors.

> This will inevitable expand beyond child porn and terrorism

This is not even a question. It always starts with "think about the children" and ends up in authoritarian stasi-style spying. There was not a single instance where it was not the case.

UK's Online Safety Act - "protect children" → age verification → digital ID for everyone

Australia's Assistance and Access Act - "stop pedophiles" → encryption backdoors

EARN IT Act in the US - "stop CSAM" → break end-to-end encryption

EU's Chat Control proposal - "detect child abuse" → scan all private messages

KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) - "protect minors" → require ID verification and enable censorship

SESTA/FOSTA - "stop sex trafficking" → killed platforms that sex workers used for safety

I wonder if he writes cover letters to every company that uses his library.

Why not? This is second easiest way to get a great paying job, second only to nepotism.

Yeah, honestly - what's the point of announcing it then?

I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY vibes here

No weekly limits so far. Just you wait if you get same or more traction as Claude you are going to go same playbook as they did.

Performance, developer experience, user experience
romanovcode · a month ago
Developer experience - Yes, in most cases.

Performance - No, in most cases.

User experience - No, in most cases.

What are you talking about. Majority of SPAs have abysmal performance compared to regular HTML rendered websites and that reflects poorly on user experiences.

No the salaries aren't high. They are typically lower than other software engineer salaries. There are a large number of contractors from Indian consulting companies with "experience in cobol" to make run of the mill cobol cheap enough.

The very high salaries you hear about sometimes are always for VERY specific mainframes that are extremely old with a lot of quirks, and are usually being paid to consultants.

Seeing the horrible performance from Indian offshore firms with modern languages I cannot imagine the mess they make with legacy languages like Cobol. Or is it the other way around?
