inductive_magic commented on Most Americans just don't matter to the economy like they once did   marketwatch.com/story/mos... · Posted by u/dataflow

Sorry, what? America makes up 5% of the worlds population, the US cosumer is not running at a 20x rate. This is nonsense.

inductive_magic · a year ago
Yeah, but the US has >25% of the global GDP.

Go to India or China and look at the average persons buying power, then go to Texas or California. Singapore and Switzerland are in a comparable income bracket, but have a combined population of <15M.

As I said somewhere else, Trump didn't win the election, the Democrats drove voters away. This isn't a platform for getting deep into the nitty gritty of that statement but it's true for some many people who either didn't vote (not out of apathy) or switched sides (not because they like Trump). It's a protest. And a hope that the democrats will change, or out of the ashes a 3rd party comes along, because they think (or maybe hope) that the Democrats are fucked. A country of hundreds of millions of people can do so much better that the two parties that you've got right now. I like that option... Get out of the mindset of "I _have_ to vote for these idiots or the assholes will get in". What's the worst that can happen? This. You're living it right now. Might as well use that fire that it lights inside you to build something else. Because I guarantee you there are millions of Republican voters who also wish there was some other option that wasn't the Democrats. That number is growing right now. And when you do create a new party, let it use sanity, instead of looking at the other bozos and just doing the opposite of what they do. Use it to reach across the aisles and pluck out the sane, reasonable people who just want pragmatism. People who respect the need for cooperation, diplomacy, sound reasoning.

How is US dependency a risk?
inductive_magic · a year ago
How are you not aware that the US painted "we are no longer a reliable partner" all above the sky?

Could we avoid politics on the tech scene? I think we're all better than that, and we know the tech scene thrives through collaboration, not isolationism.

Startup CEO from Europe here. How am I supposed to turn a blind eye to the risk that the dependency from the US has become lately?

I don't think generating hypotheses is where AI is useful, I think it's more useful for doing back of napkin (or more serious) calculations, helping to find protocols, sourcing literature, etc. Grunt work basically. Generating hypotheses is the fun, exciting part that I doubt scientists want to outsource to AI.

The latter doesn’t imply the former

inductive_magic commented on How Apple Watch estimates VO2Max within 1.2 ml/kg/min without a treadmill test   empirical.health/blog/app... · Posted by u/brandonb

Mine has been telling me I got very low VO2Max of 26 every day, for years. No matter if I work out or do nothing or go on a 5 mile walk or whatever. Let's just say I take Apple Watch is the gimmick it is. Nice for notifications and setting the timer for cooking though
inductive_magic · a year ago
Care to elaborate why you think this reading is so wrong? Vo2max has a significant genetic component, and it doesn't improve unless you actually push your anaerobic threshold, i.e. interval training and long distance running. It doesn't improve by "going on a 5 mile walk or whatever".

One thing I can’t quite figure is if you are not doing a specific exercise to the T is whether your VO2 remains accurate.

Example: I do interval running, which the Watch just records as a run. If I am not running for part of it (i.e. a 1-minute rest interval), is the Watch actually capturing the right info to calculate my VO2?

inductive_magic · a year ago
Wouldn't simply starting a HIIT-workout on the watch solve this?

Every time I hook my dev NUC up to my HDMI cable and plug in a keyboard, just to decrypt the ssd en get back to working after a reboot, I will now be thinking of this story and feel better about this little nuisance. (Yeah I know there are better ways, I could ssh into the boot env with systemd, I could just encrypt the home dir, I could somehow use the TPM (but that is still pita) etc, I'll look at that the next time I set up the a dev machine...)

>Maximilian Koehler, PhD candidate at ESMT, and Henry Sauermann, professor of strategy at ESMT, make the case for software-as-a-supervisor in a paper titled "Algorithmic management in scientific research."

I guess "AI is coming for the supervision of scientific research" doesn't have the same kick to it as the submissions title. Leadership is about people, not about tasks. But somehow I'm not surprised that this went over the head of "the register".
