You might take a look around for it. They made two original versions, the 1000 and the 5000. The 1000s are pretty hard to find nowadays (seems a lot of early adopters went for the higher memory spec).

Some folks in the community even have upgraded PalmCards (the replaceable CPU board in these) that run PalmOS 5 now, hack the display to show more bits, etc.

Can you link to the Palm OS 5 PalmCards? That seems like brain surgery.

The author mentions not having a backlight, but the IIIx does have a backlight. That's why there's a light symbol on the power button. Maybe he meant his is busted.

The EL backlight on the IIIs had a loud coil whine and was a gannet with batteries.

I would imagine that a column of soot-containing air is more conductive if it contains oxides of sulfur than if it does not.

The same electrical potential may still be present in the clouds, but instead of being neutralized dramatically it could now be dissipating slowly rather than gone in a flash :)

More study would be good to have.

A little tangential, but I wonder if the decrease in ball lightning sightings is related to a decrease in particulate matter in the atmosphere as a result of less open-flame burning (hearths and whatnot).

Alec is probably my favorite YouTuber. I remember catching his videos before he really blew up and they ticked all my nerd boxes! Unlike other youtubers I enjoy, I never seem to get tired of his content — keep going!

I don’t know his experience with academics but if the stars aligned, he would be an amazing university lecturer.

> I feel much safer telling people to “just try stuff” when I know there isn’t a risk of them breaking everything and being left with an unbootable machine

On which non-mobile OS is this true? It's certainly NOT safe on Mac/Windows/Linux to "just try stuff". I can trivially delete all of your data and/or upload all your .ssh files and Documents by "just try it"

xattt commented on Control shopping cart wheels with your phone (2021)   begaydocrime.com/... · Posted by u/mystraline

What makes this such a localised phenomenon? Locking shopping cart wheels just aren't a thing here in the Netherlands (or neighbouring countries). It used to be that most required a €1 coin inserted to unlock its link tethering it to the next car in the row, but then covid happened and a lot of shops simply disabled those locks and concluded that the system worked better without — probably driven in part by an increasing number of people who don't carry any cash.

Losing a cart is expensive, but it doesn't seem to happen at the scale that would make a full blown locking wheel solution cost effective.

One reason, beyond cart theft, is aesthetics.

A grocery store at Bayview Village, an upscale mall in Toronto, uses this system to stop cart travel outside the grocery store parking garage. Mall management considers carts trashy and that they otherwise bring down the appearance of the mall. This was one of the conditions when the store opened in 2005. Their cart policy may have changed 20 years since.
