> HQ2 is a great case study on why we ought to have the Land Value Tax.

Are you implying that Arlington does not have a real estate tax based on property value?

Otherwise it seems you are saying that Arlington should arbitrarily seize all profits from landlords because landlords are evil boogiemen.

hx87 · 6 years ago
Tax on land value only, excluding improvements. This encourages landowners to build to the limit of marginal construction costs, which benefits both the local economy and tenants.

Housing doesn’t fit the traditional supply/demand model b/c of the time constraint. It takes time to build housing but companies can grow and hire faster than housing can be built. You don’t want to overbuild and create ghost towns where developers go bankrupt trying to sell (a couple of these places exist in Europe, Canada, and America - I think China too but I haven’t seen it in person), but you don’t want to underbuild a la SF. So I agree with you that the zoning laws have a lot to do with it - but housing isn’t an instant commodity either - it can take many years, esp for high density projects.

Companies can't grow faster than the supply of office space, which also has time constraints.

The more important question is: can we have growth in economic output (which is what we actually want) without growth in economic input (which is purely instrumental)?

The desert sounds like a good place to harvest the sun.

Install some solar panels, and use it to crack water, to make hydrogen, and convert it to ammonia. Australia can power the next fuel cell revolution.

hx87 · 6 years ago
In order to crack water, you need water, which is in short supply in the desert. Desalination + massive pumps and pipelines from the ocean would soak up any increase you get in price efficiency compared to batteries or even compressed air.

I agree: I think the dirty little secret about advertising supported journalism (or really most websites producing new "content" with some regular frequency) is that much of the "content" is absolutely vapid fast food.

I don't know what an internet without all of the worthless ad-supported "content" looks like, but however it looks, suspect it is the steady-state equilibrium that will exist in the future. Because the ad-supported business model -- bad UX by definition -- is so obviously a house of cards.

I wonder what the breakeven cost would be of a monthly subscription to ad-free journalism on the quality level of the New York Times (or your preferred equivalent). Something like $200-300 maybe? If it were actually ad-free and zero-clickbait, 100% high quality journalism, I'd be willing to pay about that much.

> lose that sense of entitlement

When you are told you need to meet specific criteria to achieve a goal, it's not entitlement to expect those criteria to lead to that goal. When trying to get people to listen to what you are saying, try not to start with a put-down.

hx87 · 6 years ago
When you are told something that is wrong, holding onto it after you learn that it is wrong is entitlement.

The demographic and internal-migratory questions remind me of the EU and the problems faced by e.g. Greece. I wonder if it will result in a campaign against internal migration. Is freedom of movement within the United States explicitly part of the Constitution?
hx87 · 6 years ago
NIMBYism is pretty much a de facto campaign against internal migration. It's not much of an issue in the fastest growing states, but certain states with hot economies but stagnant or declining populations, like Massachusetts or California, are affected by it.

Taking in more calories than are used causes weight gain.

Using more calories than are consumed causes weight loss.

This is rudimentary physics, there are no new theories needed to explain it.

hx87 · 6 years ago
What factors influence the amount of calories used and taken in (not just eaten)? That's the question, and the answer is hardly rudimentary.

But this begs the question for me, if you can count the calories of these ultraprocessed foods can they still contribute to a healthy lifestyle? I mean, let's consider that I eat ultraprocessed all the time, but in my calorie range, so I don't get obese; is it less healthy than for example vegan diet, or it doesn't matter that much?
hx87 · 6 years ago
> but in my calorie range

That's the difficult part--the insulin spikes from ultraprocessed food will make you hungrier and eat more as well as lower your basal metabolism. "Calorie range" is a moving target.

In what world do you lose weight by eating 4000 calories a day?
hx87 · 6 years ago
When your basal metabolism is 4500 calories a day.
