What percentage of the night sky will be obscured if Starlink goes to 30,000 satellites?

Let me guess, if the visual radius of a one meter satellite 550,000 meters away is (1/X)^2. Thirty thousand would be 1/one trillion, or far less?

huonpine · 5 years ago
Its not just about Starlink though, its about setting a precedent before every company and country starts launching competing constellations. When should we start to care after the first few thousand or after hundred of thousands of eventual satellite's?

How many places _don't_ require voter ID? Is the U.S. the only one?

Australia you just show up and say your name, but we have compulsory voting so fraud is easier to identify.

The US has the 'Hague Invasion Act' if any US person is detained at the Hague so not sure if international law is a problem.

When Australia dropped their $0.01 coin in 1992 they originally went with "nearest rounding" i.e. 0.01 and 0.02 go down, 0.03 and 0.04 go up.

That only lasted a few years until they changed it to always "round up" - i.e. it always goes up to 0.05.

For what it's worth, dropping the $0.01 coin is great, every time I'm in the US I try to avoid them like the plague.

huonpine commented on Germany will require all petrol stations to provide electric car charging   reuters.com/article/us-he... · Posted by u/doener

Yes, because an electric parking meter uses only a few watts of electricity and may not even be connected to the grid (the most common ones I've seen just have a tiny solar panel). A electric vehicle charger may use 200 kW and require its own dedicated transformer. A fast charger is a fairly substantial cabinet. Now you're jackhammering the sidewalk to bring an underground electrical service to that spot.
huonpine · 5 years ago
Can you apply your thinking to petrol stations. We build floating city's to extract oil thousands of meters down. Is running some cables harder then that?

That would require significant more infrastructure in public spaces. Requiring petrol stations is a good first step to break the barrier that combines private/public work.

(I'm assuming petrol stations are private enterprises in Germany on this point)

huonpine · 5 years ago
Would it? My local city has electric parking meters, is it hard to add a cable to that?

Sure, but that's not what you asked.

I believe the other three will be charged and convicted. At least that what I hope will happen.

huonpine commented on Why we have so many problems with our teeth   scientificamerican.com/ar... · Posted by u/lelf

We are not talking about ancient 'societies' but rather ancient hunter gather people. Civilisation is only around 12,000 years old, modern humans have been around for 200,000 years and hominids for millions of years. Different time scale.

Think obesity, heart disease and diabetes. These don't exist in hunter gatherer people alive today and there is no record that humans ever had these problems before agriculture and civilization. We are better at treating health problems when they do arrise but we also have health problems that are caused by our lifestyle.

Why do people get dental work? Because good teeth are a sign of good health. We have far more problems with our teeth than hunter gatherer people but you don't see it because it is masked by dentistry. We have problems with blood pressure but it's masked with statins. We have problems with blood sugar but it's masked by insulin injections. We have problems with fatigue but its masked by coffee and sugar. We have problems with our joints and well... we haven't figured out what to do about that one yet. The list goes on.

Could it also be from your subconscious realising that starvation is more of a danger then predation?
