The reason the PS2 was successful it was because it was very easy to unblock it and use pirated games.

The Dreamcast wasn't as easy as I can remember.

Lol what? You got it the other way around. Also out of the dozen or so friends in my friend group who had a PS2, none of us had a modded PS2 or pirated games.

The PS2 was popular on its own and it wasn't related to piracy.

56 degrees here (Denmark, and grew up in Ireland @ 53 degrees).

> I guess it kinda hinges on this idea of "wasting" daylight. I don't feel like that. I want the sun to wake me up

The problem is that during the darkest parts of winter, even if I postpone my wake up as long as possible, I'm still getting up in the dark if I want to be able to commute into work on time. There's no sunlight waking me up.

> Do people generally go on hikes after work? I go out for drinks. haha

No, but I still have to do things like walk the dog, do the shopping on the way home. I find it a lot more pleasant starting out that part of day with a bit of sunlight.

Also, yes, drinks. This is Northern Europe after all.

EDIT to add: Civil twilight in December where I am starts ~07:40, and I also get up around 06:30 (when not dealing with insomnia like tonight).

It looks like Teamspeak covers the "group of friends who voice chat each other" use case (Discord DM groups) but not the "IRC replacement" use case (Discord servers). As far as I can tell, the licensing for Teamspeak 6 (the version that tries to be competitive with Discord) is set up such that anybody who joins the server (as opposed to anybody actively using it) uses up a slot, so the licensing fees for larger servers would be cost prohibitive. Additionally, the text chat functionality is way worse than on Discord. There's no way to just have a chat channel, you can only view and use the text chat when you're in a voice call in a voice channel.

Server admin can set the voice privileges on a channel basis, limiting effectively channels to text only.
httpsterio commented on Oat – Ultra-lightweight, zero dependency, semantic HTML, CSS, JS UI library   oat.ink/... · Posted by u/twapi

This is kind of misleading. It says it's an HTML UI library, then it says HTML + CSS, and then it says it also includes JavaScript. Why is this better than, say, DaisyUI?
httpsterio · a month ago
Iirc there's a few web components in there which would require js.

I’ve tried Gboard and SwiftKey on iOS.

Not sure if Google just gave up on updating the iOS variant or if Apple holds it back intentionally (probably a bit of both) but they pale in comparison to their Android counterparts.

I’d prefer a useable stock keyboard but I take your point.

httpsterio · a month ago
SwiftKey also crashes daily. There's no good keyboard for iphones, at least for my stubby fingers. I've literally won local mobile typing speed contests (so it's not user error I dare say) and the last five-ish years that I've been on ios have been a total and utter misery. If I had some cash floating around I would be back on android.

Hmmmm. So I do understand some concerns here. On the other hand, I also absolutely hate all forms of censorship. I don't use any of these anti-social media myself (though, perhaps hacker news is declared social media? I also used to use reddit in the past, is that social media? Where are the boundaries of that term definition by the way?), but I still absolutely dislike state actors banning websites. I have no illusion about e. g. Zuckerberg and others here; see the recent news how Facebook tried to "hook" up young kids like a drug addict; Google via Youtube on the "swiping" of videos (that one is hard to resist ... I keep on scrolling down in the hope of finding better videos, fail, and eventually realise how I am wasting my time swiping ...). But even then ... I actually think I dislike censorship more than those anti-social websites that I am not even using anyway. This may be different for younger brains, so it is not that I am not understanding the rational behind. But still ... I can't get myself to want to like censorship either.
httpsterio · 2 months ago
I wouldn't call it censorship. We don't allow kids to drink or smoke either, is that censorship? Gate keeping media thats possibly harmful for developing brains, when the users are possibly unable to make an informed decision for themselves, isn't inherently bad.

And I thought my 50 lines settings.json is getting unmanageable and needs some cutting. WoW.

httpsterio · 2 months ago
I'm guessing the user you're replying to is meaning that the vscode default config file is 11k lines and the AI setting just one of many lines in the file.

I don't think they meant that their own settings are that long, just the default in the app and they're commenting that it's ridiculous to expect a person to find it there.

I wish I had bookmarked the incredible deep dive into the multiple algorithm schemes for Tetris piece picking and which families of the game used which algorithms and why. The modern standard (as now dictated by rights holder The Tetris Company) is a bag approach, but has interesting nuances. That one I believe is 7-Bag these days (7-Piece bags). I've also heard a lot of love for 35-Bag which is the approach used by Tetris: The Grand Master 3. (From what little I know about it, TGM is a fascinating "family", especially its use in both tournament and speed running cultures. But because of all the usual drama of Tetris it can be sometimes hard to play TGM in the US as the license holder is Japanese.)

That's a pretty big title change. I'd be discouraged from posting again if that happened to a post from me like that.

editorialising of the title is not allowed, you're supposed to use the title of the page you're linking to.
