You are pitching being able to do laundry, dishes, clean, etc. as a perk. I feel like it’s a negative as part of my mental space is occupied by household chores as well. Blending errands and cleaning with meetings and focused work is a pain now. It feels like I’m doing an insane multitasking balancing act most days.

This as much as you want to do it though. I share OP's view point, but will also let those house keeping tasks rote away for a while if I'm not in the mood too.

They'll still need to be done at some point, but now we have more choice on when we want to do it, and not just between 8PM and 8 AM or only on weekends, as it was the case before.

I'm genuinely surprised that people have such vastly different experiences with Amazon. I made 231 orders with them last year(lockdown....) And haven't had a problem with a single one. Couple times I wanted to return something they just refunded me without asking to send the item back. Everything arrives next day, always(here in UK anyway), and the customer support is stellar compared to literally anywhere else. Anyone who has ever had to contact Currys customer support should know what I'm talking about.

Like, I see all of these comments on HN all the time but I have the exact opposite experience - they just have no competition over here. I'm at a point where even if something is slightly more expensive on Amazon I'd rather buy from them as I know their CS Support won't try to screw me over.

hrktb · 5 years ago
I think it vastly depends on what you are ordering.

We passed a ton of orders for valuable goods that were processed by small companies who used amazon as an alternative storefront to boost their sales. Communication was finnicky but everything went fine.

Then we also order a ton of cheap, little convenient stuff that we could have ordered on aliexpress but went to amazon for faster delivery. It was a lot more hit or miss, with pure junk coming in from tjmes to times.

We never hit the level of scam described in the article, but we'd also pay a lot more attention on where it’s coming from before forking 7k.

I find it hard to believe as well, although of course if you subscribe to prime for movies and TV you're probably more likely to use it for free deliveries as well.

But if the plan is to make Prime more popular there seem to be many, many simpler and probably cheaper ways to do that. It's as if McDonalds started a movie studio in order to sell Movie + Big Mac bundles.

In France McDonalds partnered with a book publisher to create a whole new collection to bundle books with Happy Meals.

Small steps yet, but they could be getting there.

hrktb commented on What’s your API’s “Time To 200”?   shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/05/... · Posted by u/edent

Is it really that important that the time to get to 200 should be small? I understand that it may be frustrating to get started, but assuming I am stuck to this API for a long time, I am lot more worried about stability, quality, performance and availability of the system than time to onboard.
hrktb · 5 years ago
A case where it can matter is when there is no clear commitment yet to use that API.

For instance if there is 2 or 3 alternative services, and you want to explore one of them to have a better idea of the trade-offs. Setting up an account and making “real” requests will be your benchmark.

Actually, even for a service with a decent chance to commit to it, there will still be an exploration phase to get an estimate for the implementation cost. Depending on how much the devs struggle to just try the API, the project could get more or less reprioritized for lower hanging fruits.

I lived in France for several years, and I find it somewhat amusing how protective France is of their culture. They limit the number of foreign restaurant chains like McDonalds and Chipotle. They are protective of their language. The French dinner meal ("repas") is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landmark. This "culture pass" is consistent with the French people's love of all things French.
hrktb · 5 years ago
I generally like French culture, and also see a strong economic rationale that covers the "amusing" part.

It has a strong (and also protected) agriculture sector, from memory they're in the 10 largest in the world, and having consummers buying these products is a big deal. McDonalds is fine, but they also definitely need restaurants serving steaks with blue cheese sauce with a small glass of wine.

Language protection also had an incredible effect on the entertainment industry that was seriously struggling before (also due to how strongly it was enforced, notably with the 40% rule)

With the introduction of smart phones and social media we've seen lots of negative effects increase. For example, teen suicide was decreasing until they were introduced and then started to increase again. Girls especially.

I wish there was more discussion and acknowledgement of the dangers here.

hrktb · 5 years ago
You have a point, but I also think we should be thinking beyond smartphones and try to act on what they are used for.

Not in a "guns don't kill people way", but because I think smarphone helped spread society's worse effects on girls, but they were already in a very shitty position, and we can't just get back to the status quo before the smarphones and social networks.

We can of course also work on reducing sns negative impacts, but I think it will also be a bad, long and thorny way before seeing improvements.

Roads are made for large dangerous machines that move fast and can hurt you.
hrktb · 5 years ago
That's so sad this sarcasm basically became fact after so many decades of going the wrong way.

It's also why cities are taking back whole roads from cars when they can, as it's so hard to preserve a middle ground in a lot of areas.

will be interesting when the first lawsuits appear over nonfunctioning, yet perfectly functional heavy equipment that ceases function because it can't phone home or the software/associated support/backend infra/service/security patches are eol'd.

maybe we can crush the still totally usable cars, paint them white and use them as filler for the melted ice caps?

hrktb · 5 years ago
Is the car that last bastion that will make the masses rise in anger, when every single part of our lifes are already touching that spot ?

I recently discovered the motorcycle airbag monthly subscriptions. I kind of see it as sign.

Not mine, because I'm not willing to be part of the cohort of people who find out how bad of a problem insecure tech in connected cars can be for us. We are going to make mistakes before people learn, and I'll be driving an older unconnected car.
hrktb · 5 years ago
Car related issues are never “someone else” ’s problem though.

Cars getting hacked when running around you won’t be a risk you can ignore. Your town’s critical services car systems getting compromised won’t be something you turn a blind eye to either.

As usual, apart from engaging in local committees there is little we can do from the outside, but we’ll definitely be the ones paying the price at the end.

A US company can be compliant. They just have to host EU user data in the EU.
hrktb · 5 years ago
Judging from this

> Mailchimp may in principle be subject to data access by US intelligence services on the basis of the US legal provision FISA702 (50 U.S.C. § 1881)

It might not be just a matter of where the data is stored, but also who can get access to it. From my reading, any US based conpany would be affected.

This feels like a super huge impact that would have made more waves, but the ruling also seems recent. And perhaps there will be more twists and turns yet ?
