Instagram is full of scam ads. If you report them, they answer you telling that they aren't violating the terms so there's nothing they can do about it. Scammers be selling fake starlink equipment and plans left and right. They are clever about it, they clone the website and offer a realistic good deal (not too good that would make you doubt it).

I will always bring this up because I'm bitter.

They blocked my ads account before I had the chance to run my first ads with no provided reason and no actual way to dispute with a human being. It's houseplants, not drugs. And what's worse is that you can clearly see all kinds of scams and gambling ads running amok in the wild. Their detection and support systems are both abysmal.

Not from China but in the same region. Most new machines here now have a legit OEM copy of Windows. It's getting much more affordable, even in third-world countries now that it's not worth it to risk going for a pirated copy. Still happen, but much less common than it was.

Chinampas is not truly floating. But you can absolutely have a true floating garden, as long as the water is fertile and has enough oxygen in it. Plant roots can survive in water or in water-logged conditions, dissolved oxygen is often the limiting factor.

You can have a layer of soil in your floating garden too. You can mix in amendments that will make your soil very light and fluffy. A bunch of empty bottles/jars make a pretty good floating raft that can handle some weight. May not be the best if you have concerns about microplastics in your food, but that is what they've been using here in the Mekong Delta.

But note the difference: they aren't floating gardens, they don't carry enough soil for the root systems of plants. They're large rafts that have houses/people on them.

hrisng commented on The Fediverse is an opportunity learned societies can't ignore   blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofs... · Posted by u/jbotz

The main issue with Fediverse is the vast majority of people don't know what it is. And I would suspect that most readers of Hacker News only know about Mastodon. The Fediverse needs the same kind of evangelical missionaries that made the free software movement such a big deal.
hrisng · 2 years ago
The Mastodon communities in general have been vehemently against Threads' ActivityPub integration and even go as far as pledging to block Threads preemptively and threaten to alienate instances that won't do so.

I understand their concern (I still, however, think it is extremely overblown), but you can't have your cake and eat it too. Even me, a techie, hesitate to sign up for some random instances ran by people I don't know, and with the risk of it getting shut down at the mercy of said people. Right in this thread, you will also see people that advocate for keeping it niche. That is completely fine too, but the Fediverse not taking off is partly self-inflicted and one could even argue that it is in fact the goal.

hrisng commented on Meta is banning people from advertising after running ads for Python and Pandas   lerner.co.il/2023/10/19/i... · Posted by u/reuven

>That’s right: I teach courses in Python and Pandas. Never mind that the first is a programming language and the second is a library for data analysis in Python. Meta’s AI system noticed that I was talking about Python and Pandas, assumed that I was talking about the animals (not the technology), and banned me.

If this is true, that is insanely embarrassing for a company that purports to be a sophisticated programmatic advertising platform.

I wanted to run ads for my plant nursery. Their bot suspended me before I can even run my first ads. They don't tell you the reason why and you have one chance to dispute. Then it's another automated response, again, not telling you the reason, you're permanently blocked after that. Their system make it feel like they actively punish legit but inexperienced business owner while letting all sort of scam running around in the wild.
hrisng commented on Making a music library without a SPA   begin.com/blog/posts/2023... · Posted by u/todsacerdoti

Interesting exercise. It explores the upper bounds of what can be done this way and proves that forms and links don’t need to be an SPA monstrosity.

But comparing this to the linked Astro version [0], Astro wins hands down. It feels faster, URL works, and behaves more predictably.

Turns out a music player is best built using SPA-y tech. And it is possible not to build a monstrosity along the way. These so-called island architectures are right on the money. It is server first, but breaking out of it and building some client side interaction is seamless when required.

I agree. They did a very cool exercise. But let be honest here, most of the users today would not put up with a UX like that. Even for a tech person who is used to some very hostile UX day in and day out, I would still not use that if I have the option.

People on the Fediverse expected it very much. Meta already was trying to talk to the larger instances "off the record"[1]. Fediverse users are already planning to boycott any instance which federates with Meta to block any Embrace, Extend and Extinguish moves.

hrisng · 2 years ago
Why? I would love for the general public to be able to connect to Fediverse. I don't love Meta per se, but let be real here, the majority of people are not gonna sign up for random instances that run by someone they don' know, to interact with a very small and niche subset of people, with a risk of it being shut down by that said person due to whatever personal circumstances they may have. It's the biggest obstacles when convincing people to switch to Mastodon.

If this rumor is real and Threads takes off, you can still stay in whichever instance that you like, but now be able to get updates from the artist, the experts, educators, politicians, the influencers that would not have joined the Fediverse otherwise. And more importantly, more people now can get updates from you. Reach might not be something you personally appreciate but it's very important for content creators.

I just realize how poetic that is since you're now no longer able to view anything without logging in.

That's a non-sequitir. You can be at the top of your field and not completely understand a complex system. Also, the right people may not have even been involved in the implementation of this "feature".

geohot was naively optimistic when he offered his so called "internship" to Musk. Ended up resigning in one month without delivering anything.
