Running a small project on Hetzner from Germany. Got the email this morning. Honestly, even after the increase their dedicated boxes are still absurdly cheap compared to what you'd pay at AWS or GCP for equivalent specs.

The real story here isn't Hetzner being greedy. It's that AI companies are vacuuming up every DRAM chip on the planet and the rest of us get to pay the tax. I priced out a RAM upgrade for my home server last week. Same kit I bought 8 months ago for 90 EUR is now 400+. That's not normal market dynamics.

What worries me more is the second-order effects. Startups that would normally spin up cheap VPS instances to prototype and iterate now face meaningfully higher costs at the exact stage where every euro matters. The "just deploy it" culture that made European indie dev scene so productive was built on sub-10 EUR/month boxes. Those days might be over for a while.

Excuse me, but if the difference between 10 EUR per month and 14 eur per month is going to kill your startup, you probably shouldn't try to start it. Might be time to think about using and creating less memory-hungry software.

could you automate a BJJ coach?

Who's going to pay for a BJJ coach when nearly everyone is out of job?

I want to learn driving.

I live in a city with well-connected public transport (Singapore) so I don't feel the need to learn. However, this year I travelled to some rural areas in Japan and started to feel the pain of relying solely on public transport which is either extremely sparse, or sometimes non-existent which limits the places I want to visit. That's why I felt like if I obtain this skill, I can explore more places in my travels

I learned this year at 45 - before that I only had a moped license and used a moped. I am not a "car person" and did not expect I'd like driving. I turned out wrong! I enjoy it and especially enjoy the benefits and freedom a car gives you. You'll most likely not regret it too.

No trees at all on any of these photos, except for one photo which seems to be part of a garden (and maybe it is only larger bushes). I would feel very depressed by that alone.

It's too windy for trees there, similarly to large parts of Iceland. People could probably plant trees that are not high - I don't know what species will feel good in this climate though.

I'm surprised no one mentioned mPDF. Maybe php isn't very popular here :)

If anyone watched that movie, Elevation[0], the “line of death” was 8,000 feet.

The line of death is at 8,000 meters, not feet

I truly love this comment, which essentially says: LLMs are glorified calculators, with ambiguous grammar. :)

Computers are glorified calculators, yet they power most of our lives

I tried Kimi on a few coding problems that Claude was spinning on. It’s good. It’s huge, way too big to be a “local” model — I think you need something like 16 H200s to run it - but it has a slightly different vibe than some of the other models. I liked it. It would definitely be useful in ensemble use cases at the very least.

I tried it a couple of times in comparison to Claude. Kimi wrote much simpler and more readable code than Claude's over-engineered solutions. It missed a few minor subtle edge cases that Claude took care of though.
