Interesting creative people will produce interesting creative output.

People with no taste will produce tasteless content.

The mountain of slop will grow.

And some of us have no intention of publishing any output whatsoever but just find the existence of these tools fascinating and inspiring.

And some of us have no intention of publishing any output and find the existence of these tools extremely worrying and problematic.

Did they ever fix the audio quality? It was poor even compared to real world ATC audio.
gburdell3 · 2 years ago
Yes, they updated the audio codec a few years ago. Now it sounds great. They also updated the live position syncing system so that other planes move much more smoothly across your screen

> also many are not and are more productive in an office environment

I see this assertion every time the WFH/RTO topic is brought up, but there's never any data to back it up. Mind changing that?

gburdell3 · 2 years ago
When I work from home, I watch 8 hours of Twitch and get 0 work done. When I work from the office, I watch 0 hours of Twitch and get 8 hours of work done. I simply don't have the self-control to effectively work from home. That's all the data I need.

I somewhat blame this on the way jobs are set up now. There’s so much focus on hustle hustle hustle there isn’t any time to be looking for a date or any social activity that isn’t directly profitable. It also means dates are also treated like hustles, cost centers that don’t make you money. All the people I know who spend more time in their communities (adoption groups, food banks, mutual aid funds, churches, etc) are all happily in at least one relationship (several are poly!) while the career focused people I know are miserably alone.

It is possible to be "happily alone" for many people.

FAA is incentivized to do nothing and sit on its hands. It's a mess. A good quarter of the country is medically barred from ever flying, even solo. The chances of this changing are 0 and it'll get worse.

Insert the "who could have done this" meme with the FAA shooting interest in flying and # of pilots.

gburdell3 · 3 years ago
The medical system is really messed up. I would love to eventually get my PPL, but I also highly suspect that I have undiagnosed ADHD, and I don't want to essentially sign away my right to ever get treatment. Fortunately Microsoft Flight Simulator and VATSIM scratch the itch to fly for now, but it still sucks that I'll probably never get to actually do it in real life.
gburdell3 commented on Ask HN: What is your retirement plan? After retirement, what?    · Posted by u/akudha
gburdell3 · 3 years ago
I don't really plan on retiring. I'm saving for it, since I'm in my mid-20s and a lot can change over time, but knowing what I know about myself right now, I can't imagine that I would enjoy retirement. I need something to work for, but I've always struggled to motivate myself to work on things without outside influence. I think a lot of my coworkers have felt the same way, since about half of them who retired have returned as contractors just because they enjoy the work.

That's completely false. Earlier, when first viewing a Wikipedia page today, I experienced the same (very) mild panic that typically accompanies visiting the mobile page by accident. A regression in the visual appeal of the layout, in its readability at a glance, and in the efficiency of its use of space. Earlier design could be considered "iconic", so this change is especially detrimental.
gburdell3 · 3 years ago
I also thought I was served the mobile site at first, but after using the new site a bit I actually quite like it. One of my longstanding complaints with the old design was that using the full width of the screen for text is very hard to read on a modern monitor, so I'm glad to see they narrowed it down a bit. I also really like the floating table of contents.

I live in the UK. I can send money instantly anywhere in the EU for nothing via SEPA and frequently do. That covers 28 countries. If I do want to send money to someone in another country I can use paypal, or for larger sums, one of the myriad international wire services that are regulated by the FCA and where I have recourse if something goes wrong.
gburdell3 · 3 years ago
I hate crypto as much as the next guy, but try sending some money to Iran and see how well that goes. There's a legitimate use there for people with families in tumultuous countries.

Can someone explain this vtoon trend to me? It doesn't seem to be driven by anonymity because their real name is easily findable, so I assume it's something else? It seems very common, especially in certain communities.
gburdell3 · 3 years ago
Some people just prefer their public persona to be in the form of an avatar instead of their real face. They want to have something there to represent themselves instead of just streaming a screen and nothing else, but they would rather that representation be an avatar or character rather than their physical selves.
