Having privacy should be a user choice. I am firmly in the Apple ecosystem and in the EU. Apple could engineer it such that interoperability means giving up privacy. User can choose. Apple could show in the App Store/settings exactly which data is leaked. Apple is using privacy as a tactic.

Ok, so the states fall, but not before existing for at least a generation and in some cases effectively an entire working life:

- Francoist Spain: 40 years.

- Pinochet Chile: 17 years.

- Salazar Portugal: 36 years.

If you were 22 when Pinochet took power for example you didn't see the end until 39. Your best years lost. And that's the "lite" version. (I ignored Italy because of WW2)

If the US MAGA contingent gloms on to this fascism malarkey by anointing a true believer after Trumps inevitable death (he is pushing 80, after all) we would be looking at decades of loss.

You think Trump is in power? I do not think he really is. He is a puppet. Others are the Puppet Masters.

assuming this is serious...

There is no silver bullet - you can't just build a 10bn$ nuclear bomb programm and call it a day. All the other means are still needed to transition away from fossil fuel.

The earlier we start the better.

Very much this! This is about removing (if it at wall will do that) without fixing the root cause. How deep can you put your head in the ground? It reminds of the Matrix where they scorched the skies to remove solar power capabilities as a way to block the enemy.

Early in my career I had this naive starry eyed vision of tech industry being “one of the good people.” Google’s “don’t be evil” motto, companies building stuff to actually help people, solving interesting problems, good work/life balance, etc.

Then I grew up. But after post covid boom layoffs and the last election, I realized it’s no different than any other industry including tobacco and oil who actively harm the public for short term gains. I hate that upper strata with a passion.

This is what happens when you build a capitalist system based on quarterly results

fredski42 commented on Ask HN: With trust in Firefox gone, is Chrome-ish the only option?    · Posted by u/flowinho
fredski42 · a year ago
Although Firefox is still the best to choose from a privacy standpunt currently, I am convinced the time will come where the sponsorship from Google will stop. Then Mozilla will likely not survive and the development of Firefox is left to the community. A browser is a pretty complex piece of software so I doubt the community will be able to maintain that.

Unfortunately the self-host documentation isn't great and the deployment options are quite limited.

Sure, it's at least dockerised, but it requires root privileges (so no running it in a secured kubernetes env) and forces you to use MSSQL as the db (so pay up for that or hope that express works).

It's also unfriendly to automated deployment, with several manual steps and regular rebooting requires.

All the ad tech in the world won’t matter if people have stopped using the medium those ads are displayed on top of by then. I think the way people use the web is about to change drastically.
fredski42 · a year ago
Very much this. I think the reason Google products are more and more infested with ads is to keep up revenue against people moving to better alternatives.
