Very sleek marketing, but why did they rebrand (the fantastic) KDE Connect to "Zorin Connect"[1]? From the mere <30 commits, I see no reason for the fork, only confused users.

If it was tightly integrated into the OS I could sort of understand not mentioning its name, like you don't want "Foobar Control Panel" and "FizzBuzz Start Menu". But KDE Connect is a standalone app you can install even on Windows. And this is not just hiding the name, it's replacing it!

So, why the "rebrand"[2]? It feels like an attempt at stealing credit.

Presumably because a good portion of the target audience are less technical users, and there's no reason to be throwing extra (ex-)initialisms at them. "Zorin Connect" is clearly something that will connect my Zorin OS to something. "KDE Connect" is something that might perhaps connect me to a "KDE", but what's a "KDE" anyway and why would I ever need to connect to it?

Surprised nobody has pointed this out yet — this is not a GPT 4.5 level model.

The source for this claim is apparently a chart in the second tweet in the thread, which compares ERNIE-4.5 to GPT-4.5 across 15 benchmarks and shows that ERNIE-4.5 scores an average of 79.6 vs 79.14 for GPT-4.5.

The problem is that the benchmarks they included in the average are cherry-picked.

They included benchmarks on 6 Chinese language datasets (C-Eval, CMMLU, Chinese SimpleQA, CNMO2024, CMath, and CLUEWSC) along with many of the standard datasets that all of the labs report results for. On 4 of these Chinese benchmarks, ERNIE-4.5 outperforms GPT-4.5 by a big margin, which skews the whole average.

This is not how results are normally reported and (together with the name) seems like a deliberate attempt to misrepresent how strong the model is.

Bottom line, ERNIE-4.5 is substantially worse than GPT-4.5 on most of the difficult benchmarks, matches GPT-4.5 and other top models on saturated benchmarks, and is better only on (some) Chinese datasets.

GPT-4.5's advantages are supposed to be in aspects that aren't being captured well in current benchmarks, so the claim would be shaky even if ERNIE's benchmarks actually showed better performance.

> The author gives no evidence to back up on this claim.

How can one provide evidence that something is not being displayed on a website? Isn't this, like, a formal fallacy, or something?

> We've been hearing all week from readers who say they can no longer post about Linux on Facebook or share links to DistroWatch. Some people have reported their accounts have been locked or limited for posting about Linux.

fau · a year ago
You've implied it's impossible to give such evidence and then you've immediately proved yourself wrong by giving it.

But anyway, they're not asking for evidence that something isn't being displayed. They're asking for evidence that 'Starting on January 19, 2025 Facebook's internal policy makers decided that Linux is malware and labelled groups associated with Linux as being "cybersecurity threats"'.

Epub is just html with css and images in a zip file. So the quality of the typography will largely depend on the renderer, not the file itself.
fau · 5 years ago
Unfortunately, the renderer that gets used will sometimes itself depend on the file. For example, if you transfer the generated Mobi file to a Kindle as the article says, it will get rendered using an inferior renderer (in terms of kerning, for example) compared to the renderer that would've been used had the file been a KFX ("Kindle Format 10").

That's only slightly less unacceptable than a closed-source american web-browser.
