That's already over ten years ago... Wow CS:GO is still the new CS for me, that never catched on and everybody played 1.6
emsixteen · 17 days ago
Source was the game that never really grabbed the 1.6 playerbase, moreso than 1.6.

I have a (knowingly irrational) dislike for Counter Strike because it fragmented what was previously an essentially single 'Quake / Quake 2" community, making the free-for-all adrenaline frag fests that I most enjoyed less populated, specifically at LANs.

I got my fun from balls out running and firing rockets and rails in the chaos of free for all, and CS offered what was essentially the 'we're all campers' version, which wasn't fun at all (for me, at the time).

I didn't want to simulate anything, I want(ed) chaos, instant respawn, lightning reflexes, constant motion. Maybe I do have ADHD.

CS has stood the test of time though, so respect for that.

For us the combination of WoW and WC3, then later LoL, are what ruined the thriving LAN centre scene across Ireland. There were 12 or so actual GAMETHEWORLD centres, then other wee franchised ones. WoW especially just didn't lend itself to LAN gaming, absolutely sucked the life out of the centres.

Thank you for the report! I was thinking of redoing the landing page for a while anyway. Are you using a niche browser or something like that? I haven't had anyone experience this issue nor was I able to reproduce it.

Firefox Dev Edition, nothing odd imo.

I'm building a SRS language learning app [1] so I've thought about this topic a bit, but I've come to a conclusion that srs algorithms might be just a nerd optimization obsession. My app has "stupid" 1,3,7,15,30 or something like that intervals, and the reality is that if I know a card, I can swipe it within 2 seconds, and if I just barely know it, I can spend 30 seconds on it.

So optimizing the algorithm such that every card comes at the exact right moment might cause all cards to feel too hard or too easy. I think having a mix of difficult and easy cards is actually a feature, not a bug.

This site makes my (more than good) computer's browser crawl to a halt.

Step 3: Attacker sends the email from Outlook

AFAIK you can't spoof the path listed in the Received: headers as all the servers on the path will add their own. That's always been my way of verifying where emails come from, and it's reassuring to know that I would've caught this one too. Emails coming from Google aren't going to take a detour through Microsoft servers.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't manually check the headers for every single email, or even only every one from Google and co, so are you doing something to flag or visualise this in some way?

This kind of take is only true if you haven't given the tax system any thought at all and just want to dunk on the IRS to get upvotes

The govt only has an idea of what you might owe from "official" information (W2s), Since we don't live in a totalitarian society where the govt knows everything about you.

Filing taxes is the govt telling you to make sure to report anything they do not know about.

Also you do not go to jail for getting your taxes wrong, you go to jail if you fail to fix them after being audited or fraud.

Ah right, that's odd, wasn't aware I lived in a totalitarian society here in the Nordics. We literally just get a notification to check it, and because the state is neither trying to gotcha us or baby us, that's just the norm. The part that takes longest for me in the whole process is usually the 2FA.

Forgive my ignorance, feel like it's embarrassing to ask here to be honest, but can someone explain how this helps/works? I've never actually used these placeholders, but I always imagined that they work by processing the image beforehand on the server and using something like a super low quality image or gradient or such as the placeholder. If this is done in pure CSS, does the browser not need to download the image first to figure out what's in it, before then doing the placeholder effect? Perhaps it doesn't help that I've not had my morning coffee yet, but I don't understand.

This same thing happening on the 40 series cards was good enough vindication for me not 'upgrading' to that at the time. I'd rather not burn my house down with my beloved inside.

Can't believe the same is happening again.

As a result of sales drones getting hold of my number, I have to put my phone on silent and never pick up unless I recognize the number. Very unfortunate. What if there is an emergency with my kids?
emsixteen · 7 months ago
If you're using iOS you can set certain contacts to bypass silent mode so that you still hear their notifications/calls. I know it doesn't help with unknown numbers, but just saying in case you're not aware. I'd be surprised if you can't do the same on Android.

I wish it had a way to integrate with the Find My app instead of having to go through their own (wonky) process to retrieve locations. The chinese clones can do it (even with their own branding), so it must be possible somehow.
emsixteen · 7 months ago
The clones are limited though, are they not? Like, they don't have the directional stuff and all that do they? I may be misremembering what I've read elsewhere.
