does "preference" equate to endless, manipulative advertising from car manufacturers? Or, perhaps, the "preference" of higher profit margins from larger cars, pushing manufacturers to entirely abandon reasonably sized cars?

also once everybody else is obstructing your view with a bigger car it becomes necessary to have a bigger one, it's a race to the metaphorical bototm

Websites I use regularly for banking don't work outside of chrome. I've done the pure firefox forray recently but after 6 months it gets tiresome to have 2 browsers and 3 weeks ago Ive admitted defeat for the second time and went full chrome. Who am I lying to -- market cornered, ggwp. It's like trying to eat food without paying a cent to cargill.
elyobo · 2 months ago
Really? I've been FF only for years and everything works reliably, including banking sites (Australia & New Zealand).

The "online safety" of kids is just an excuse, I suspect.

Australia really wants to be able to identify and track the ID of all their citizens online. No more Internet anonymity for them.

Reasonable assumption but really our politicians just are that dumb.

Why does the border of the sun look so poorly antialiased in all of these? Are they doing some sort of postprocessing that would cause that?
elyobo · 9 months ago
I assumed it was the result of the "bubbling" that they describe in the video that also accounts for the grainy appearance of the surface; presumably the bubbling would be visible like this side on?

Fun game, a convenient wordle style social media sharing utility would spread the word. Not sure what would work.

> But whipping out your phone sucks compared to just tapping your card against a reader.

And I’d have said whipping out my card sucks compared to using the watch that’s already on my hand. (Of course that works with my other cards as well)

elyobo · 2 years ago
I don't really understand how whipping out your phone is harder than whipping out your card even if you don't have a watch. In my case I gave up carrying the cards at all a few years back and pay for everything on my phone anyway; the convenience of not needing a wallet or any cards at all is high.

US fees seem very high; Australia & New Zealand have a selling agent fee in the 2-3% range (+ variable vendor paid advertising on top) and buyers agents are uncommon so not a fee most pay at all.

I hope this means they're banning the common US practice of omitting sales taxes and tips from prices.

Screenshots would have made this much easier to comprehend. The website presumably uses the scheme but only two colours, one of which is black. So its subjectively impossible to see how it differs from any other 2 colour scheme using a muted/warm background.

Some simple diagrams, or photos rendered into a compatible colourscheme, or some reason to inject colour into the word flow, SOMETHING to illustrate.

elyobo · 2 years ago
Screenshots would have and I don't know why the author didn't add them when they have added them on Twitter[1]. I like the idea but still too low contrast for my personal preference.

elyobo commented on 'Couple,' 'Few,' and 'Several'   merriam-webster.com/gramm... · Posted by u/cardamomo

It's not even a consistently American thing.

I (from Texas) use "couple" to mean two-ish-or-more whereas my wife (from New Mexico) uses couple to mean exactly two.

I use "couple" to (roughly) mean "just enough in small amounts" like:

- just a couple more minutes (obviously doesn't mean 2 minutes and 0 seconds)

- grab a couple of glasses (probably two unless there are three people)

- buy a couple of things (I'm making a short trip for a small number of things)

For those decrying using imprecise language, it's because these are scenarios where enumerating would give an incorrect level of precision.

elyobo · 2 years ago
I'm being informed by other Aussies that it's not consistent here either, lots of people seem to use it imprecisely as well. I'm actually a Kiwi (but have lived the most recent 15 years in Australia) so it seems I've been misinterpreting the Aussies for years...
