Pretty much all electric cars have single speed transmissions, so there's no downshifting. And modern vehicles have electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, automatic emergency braking, and several other safety systems. It's pretty hard to overreact with those enabled. The main issue is that people exceed safe speeds for the conditions, making them unable to brake or turn in time to avoid a collision.

Right now, most self-driving software will refuse to activate in conditions of poor visibility. I've had that happen with Tesla's FSD, though in that case it was snowing so much that the road should have been closed. Also when the snow is deep enough that your front bumper becomes a plow, it will refuse to activate.

on the contrary, no amount of safety systems can compensate for a loss of traction on ice and snow.

The surest way to be safe on snow covered roads is to not drive at all. Also, none of the electronic trickery is a replacement for real winter tires, which many people do not buy.

>> could you imagine the audacity of actually not driving into an intersection when the light is yellow and you know you're going to block the crossing traffic?

I wonder how many Waymos following the rules would be needed to reduce gridlock.

the solution to traffic is transit, not computers driving cars.

I can read an article about 10x faster than watch a video. I don't have a problem with Alec's videos per se, but it's crazy to claim that video is the medium with higher information density. Text is always going to be the better medium for transmitting information, except for cases where the unique advantages of video (moving pictures and sound) help.

there are things you can communicate well in text as well as things that make more sense with visuals.

Please, stop thinking in binaries.

Why do I almost never see a cash discount like this in practice? An I shopping in the wrong places? Or does something else prevent it?
eldaisfish · 10 days ago
Because that’s your subjective experience?

Canada has lots of stores that offer a discount if you pay cash. Many have a minimum purchase amount for credit cards.

It’s pretty easy to change jobs on an H-1B if you are high skill. I love hearing folks, who aren’t on an H-1B, tell me things like this. Or that I’m paid less when I’m paid more.

I know these abuses happen, no system is perfect. But I feel the bias in the US against H-1Bs from random citizens not from employers. And the government today has quite strong bias against immigrants.

eldaisfish · 11 days ago
you are the edge case. for you, it is easy to change employers. For a lot of folks, it is not, despite being equally skilled. it is pretty crass to hand-wave away the real risk of being forced to uproot your life because of the risk that your visa may not be renewed.

About 20% of H1B visas go to indian outsourcing firms. You know the culprits here. Are you really going to argue that these firms are not abusing the system and underpaying employees?

Don't forget these parts have been around in hybrids for multiple decades, and taxis often use hybrids (so higher milage, longer running times). In my country the most popular car for taxis and food delivery is the Prius gen 2, which was made from 2003 - 2009.
eldaisfish · 11 days ago
that's not a valid comparison. The highest voltage in a Prius battery is about 350 V. Most older Prius designs use a 200 V battery. A typical EV battery is also around 350 V but the current in and out is much higher. Many EVs use 800 V designs.

The most important factors that destroy solid state devices like IGBTs are voltage and heat. IGBTs in wind turbines fail every ten years or so. Expect to see many EV inverters fail in the next decade.

I like the quip that AI raises the floor not the ceiling. I think it helps the bottom 20% perform more like the middle 50% but doesn't do much for people at the top.
eldaisfish · 19 days ago
I add to that analogy. AI raises the floor but some of the floor tiles fall away, unpredictably.

I am an electrical engineer based in Ontario, Canada. I'm very interested in the energy transition, especially the shift to electric vehicles, electric heat and the opportunities this creates in the electricity sector.

Looking for contract, part-time or volunteer work, specifically in renewable energy or smart grid consulting. I can also help write/review grant applications for Canadian federal/provincial support, but outside my areas of direct work.

Preferably smart grid technology, wind energy, solar PV, energy policy. Happy to chat about the long term revenue streams on the electricity grid, especially opportunities on the distribution system.

Location: Remote, prefer opportunities in US/Canada

Experience - Fifteen years total. Wind energy design background (Netherlands), Power systems degrees, experience working with the Canadian Federal government.

Remote: Yes, please. Willing to relocate: No.

Résumé/CV: On request. See linkedin: https://www.linkedin.co/in/eldrichrebello Email: eldrich [at] eldrichrebello.ca Scientific publications: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=a0oog-YAAAAJ

No. I'm just saying that "there are no HDMI devices near me" is weird and hard to achieve.

To use my phone as a desktop all I need is the phone itself. USB cable I most often already have to charge it. Phone works as a keyboard and mouse and I have large screen to browse web, play, watch videos. ZERO new devices, only things I already carry and a screen that is already there.

eldaisfish · 25 days ago
i disagree entirely.

Think about a poor person. Are they better served by a laptop or your proposed solution of four different devices?

Even in my own daily life, i struggle to find places where your solution is practical.
