elthran commented on Egg prices vs. Consumer Price Index since 1980   fred.stlouisfed.org/graph... · Posted by u/em500

As someone who keeps backyard chickens and recently got a new flock, I will say anecdotally this spike was observed even in livestock.

In March 2025, I tried to order baby chicks to replace some of my aging flock. Not only was every hatchery sold out, but going in person to farm stores meant waiting in lines on the days shipments were received and dealing with rationing (3 chicks per person, etc).

I opted to order chicks for the fall instead of doing a normal spring brooding and luckily the weather cooperated, but as is normal I ordered some extra chicks as padding. The extras I have now been able to sell locally at a premium, covering my entire cost.

Let me just add I don't think backyard eggs are cheaper, even at the height of price spike, because when externalities like feed and enclosure are calculated the resulting product won't have the economies of scale. But I think many people decided they wanted a steady supply after eggs became hard to come by. I personally keep chickens for reasons besides eggs but I am still happy that more folks are keeping chickens.

Your phrasing of the last sentence caught my interest. Is the other reason fresh chicken meat, or is there another benefit to keeping them that I can't think of?

"Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic."
elthran commented on Toronto’s network of pedestrian tunnels   worksinprogress.news/p/to... · Posted by u/bensouthwood

> Montreal has a similar system, while Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore and Houston have systems that resemble the Path in some respects. A few European cities also make considerable use of pedestrian tunnels, including Helsinki, Stockholm and Munich.

Japan's northernmost major city, Sapporo, has a very extensive one -- of those I've seen, it's the one that's most comparable to Toronto's.

The other Japanese tunnel/undercity complexes are mostly subterranean malls around subway stations. (This also applies to all of the ones in Hong Kong.) But Sapporo's is seriously huge.

I think the common denominator is that people would rather walk in a heated underground space when it gets cold.

We were running late for our train in winter - the Sapporo underground system let us walk to the station so much faster than trying to navigate ice, snow and road crossings

elthran · 7 months ago
UK pensions are subject to income tax, if you're receiving more than the annual tax free allowance.

CS GO lootboxes that then get adopted by the rest of the industry. I don't think it's because people like to gamble though, but rather that demand for cosmetics (especially in Asia) is more inelastic than thought so far greater profits can be gleaned then slapping a definite price tag.

Team Fortress 2 had crates/keys before CSGO was released - but the blame definitely falls on Valve's shoulders in this timeline (I'm sure if Valve didn't create them in the popular form, someone at EA would have)

The French are the European experts on social violence (and I am French)...

In fact OP's comment somewhat shows the often noxious atmosphere in France. Here in the UK I see Teslas everywhere and people don't say or do anything (maybe they comment on the neighbour's new Tesla at home but they are polite in public in a very British way, and criminal damage is a serious crime...) In France I can believe that a Tesla owner may fear that their car will be vandalised or that some random people might throw insults at them in the street if Tesla is labeled the wrong way...

Edit: TBH, I wouldn't even say that there is a low tolerance for fascism because historically and to this day, economic interventionism, strong state, strong leader, political violence, tendency towards authoritarism, social conservatism have been big part of the culture. That is balanced by a tendency towards anarchism at the same time...

At least in the UK the license plate lets you know when the car was registered, so it's simple to tell if they bought the Tesla before Elon went off the cliff fully. I'm not going to begrudge anyone who doesn't sell their car, my judgement is reserved for the people buying them now

Though it brings a whole host of other challenges, if I could scan my groceries as I put them in the cart, I could bag them in my own containers as I go. I know a few chains allow scanning while shopping but it's not widespread and I'm not sure if they actually allow you to use your own bags. Theft would be a real problem that can't just be hand waved away but it sure would be ideal and do away with most of the grocery bag problem, at least for me.

The process is super common in the big UK supermarkets - and it's absolutely my preferred way of doing a larger shop. You can use whatever bags/containers you like (or even none at all and just keep things in the trolley/cart if you want). They then do spot checks at the checkout to see if items have been scanned, and remove any security tags

Strange.

AFAIK in Europe car insurance is obligatory and insurance companies can't refuse to sell it to you (if they did it would be mind blowing, catch 22)

elthran · a year ago
Nothing to prevent them giving you an "F U quote" of say 6k for a year though - they've offered to insure, you've declined their price (speaking from UK perspective)
