dwhitney commented on Diagraming sentences in the 19th century   publicdomainreview.org/co... · Posted by u/benbreen

I went to a Catholic grammar school (yes, I guess that's a pun there). We didn't learn any science, but we sure learned our grammar. Including diagramming sentences (I don't remember all those refinements, though). The process is pretty helpful.

I find that book reader to be very unappealing, and for this Fremont Older book, which I'm currently writing about:

https://archive.org/details/myownstory00oldegoog

I downloaded the PDF. I think they should have done that here, too and extracted some actual diagrams.

I learned how to diagram sentences in college. It was eye-opening, and I wish I had learned it sooner.
dwhitney commented on Should I use JWTs for authentication tokens?   blog.ploetzli.ch/2024/sho... · Posted by u/pantalaimon

oof - this article is pushing bad advice - general disclaimer: use a third party authentication system like Okta or Cognito. It's going to save you so much grief down the road. They pretty much all use the same pattern (OIDC), so you just need to learn it once, and you're good for at least another decade. Authentication is one of the easiest and most important things to take off of your plate. Do it.

dwhitney commented on How to get 7th graders to smoke   experimental-history.com/... · Posted by u/HR01

Contrarian view - the programs are working. Rates of smoking among teens over the past three decades:

Ever used nicotine: 70.1% in 1991 to 17.8% in 2021; Occasional use of nicotine: 27.5% in 1991 to 3.8% in 2021; Frequent use of nicotine: 12.7% to 0.7%; Daily use of nicotine: 9.8% in 1991 to 0.6% in 2021

I suspect the same can be said for workplace sexual harassment and outlooks on diversity. I agree that the programs are dumb and the trainings are dumb, but they have an effect.

Bring in a cat and you get a burger!

After a while the hamburger's will taste different. That's the point when you will surely know the program became self sufficient...

I was under the impression that expressing a sense of humor was not allowed on this site. Can someone clarify :)

It would very obviously be useful for work if you can actually get high res, effectively unlimited monitor space. Maybe not for everyone, but people already spend $3500+ on monitor setups somewhat regularly (and employers definitely do this). Apple themselves sell a single monitor that costs $2300 when fully spec'd out (5k, but the point is that they know what people spend on monitors). I can't figure out why that wasn't the highlight of the demo, since that's just very clearly the easiest way to sell a $3500 device with this specific set of features.

The recording video of a kid's birthday was one of the most ridiculous thing's I've ever seen. I'd maybe record my kid with something like this every once in a while, but I certainly wouldn't be wearing ski goggles while he blows out candles.

Yeah that was silly, but aren't all of the new iPhone cameras 3D cameras? People take photos/videos all of the time. Now you can immerse yourself in them. I think it's pretty cool

Oddly long winded semantic argument about the literal definition of Unidentified Flying Objects. Yes, they're unidentified, yes, they're hard to see which is why they're unidentified.
dwhitney · 2 years ago
Yeah but more importantly the post suggests there are likely terrestrial explanations which obey the laws of physics as we understand them contrary to what's been depicted in the media recently.

I want to believe, but I agree with the author of the post that we need to see some evidence that's outside of the "Low Information Zone"

dwhitney commented on Elitism as the mid-career growth engine   stkbailey.substack.com/p/... · Posted by u/peterhunt

Interestingly, I feel like this sort of attitude is a real issue at the precise moment the author describes it as a boon.

When you are early to mid career, it is crucial to look for ways to amplify the good you can do in your workplace and solidify your brand as an individual. To do this, you should be looking, ironically, to elevate others. Doing so is the only way to build a reputation that people are going to actively WANT to talk about (e.g. "oh, having trouble? You should call in Jim, he helped me with a related thing"). This is invaluable.

Perhaps I am speaking through a lens, but had I taken the authors advice and taken a more combative role at such a juncture, I believe I would have far fewer opportunities now.

You can elevate others while pushing your ideals - once you truly understand something, you can teach it.

Say no and hang up. If they start something, respond in kind, and ask our allied countries to stand united.

The US needs the world far, far more than the world needs the US, and it's time the world realizes this. Forcing this nation of war-criminals and foreign policy bullies in line is long overdue.

dwhitney · 3 years ago
As a US citizen, I whole heartedly agree, and I assume our government would do the same.
