duhi88 commented on Improving Firefox stability on Linux   hacks.mozilla.org/2021/05... · Posted by u/TangerineDream

I've never had an issue with it crashing on Linux, but I've had this bug for months that causes the scrollbar to jump around. Usually it jumps up 10-20px every couple of seconds. I've tried removing all plugins, refreshing, changing mice, etc. until I had to switch to Brave.

Anyone else come across this issue? I'm using Solus.

It's weird, the only reason I can't use Apple Music is because it doesn't sync between devices. Apple being the company it is, it's just crazy to me that I can't pickup listening where I left off on my phone once I open my laptop.

Aside: Also there's a ton of bugs, very poor job on the QA side of Apple Music

Spotify has designed this feature amazingly. Sometimes, I wonder why companies don't steal good ideas from each other more often, it seems like Apple has just refused to implement this terrific user experience.

I never remember where the "recently listened to" section is. Seems like an easy thing to get right.

Still, I prefer Apple Music's album-focused library to Spotify's playlist-focused approach.

Or they could put it on the lock button like they did with one of their iPads.

For me, the most common scenario in which I'd want TouchID is when I have my phone resting flat on my desk. Depending on which phone case you may or may not have on your phone, the power button might be conveniently accessible. I'd prefer a version that didn't require me to lift my phone up off the desk in order to unlock it.

It can do 120 FPS, which is considered “high frame rate” for televisions. 60 FPS is generally considered standard.
duhi88 · 4 years ago
What content is available over 60fps? I don't think they ever released The Hobbit in 48fps, and that's the only movie I'm aware of that was filmed with higher fps.

Is this just for games?

Well, paradoxically perhaps, none of that is seen in the single most popular text editor of today.

Have you used SublimeText?

That SVG does have to be inline though, which drastically increases your HTML page’s size. You cannot style an SVG loaded in an IMG element.

Imagine rendering 50 rows with each 6 icons, 1kb each. There are 6 unique icons, so it’s only 6kb each loading them from the server, but inline you’ll have 300kb of SVG icons

duhi88 · 5 years ago
Most icons are generally tiny. Millage will vary, but they can speed up your site. Fewer requests for a slightly large page size.

Not resilient to disease maybe but I'm sure webdevs will be overjoyed at having a much easier time porting sites. The power dynamic that matters is political not technical. Google doesn't really get to exert control over the web with their rendering engine or V8 it's the actual high-level browser policy that matters and Firefox doesn't actually have to follow any of it.

Firefox gutted all of their internals with project Servo. If they had instead integrated Blink would it have been any different?

I always think it's interesting what things people want to have diverse ecosystems with competing implementations (browsers) and what things people consider that an unnecessary duplication of effort (Wayland compositors).

duhi88 · 5 years ago
Google routinely implements, fails to implement, and fails to deprecate features that align with their company goals (i.e. namely collecting lots of data). AMP, Browser Extension Manifest v3, cookie privacy features, ad-blocking features, file formats, and many more that most people have never heard of.

Happens all the time. Without Webkit and Gecko, the web would simply be "whatever Google wants to do". Having multiple browser implementations helps balance out whatever Google's agenda is at any given time.

Butterfly keyboard / low-travel.

Am I the only person who has grown to love the butterfly keyboard? It take sooo much stress of my of joints to type since the travel is so shallow. I also type considerably faster with the shallower/lower travel required.

I know folks had issues with reliability with he design but I guess I'm on the of the lucky few who hasn't had issues.

I really liked the feel of my 2017 MBP. It just didn't work well as a portable, every day device because the keyboard was always breaking.

You are correct, it is suitable for small-medium traffic websites with less write operations and more read operations. We have a simple file locking mechanism to handle this situation. The caching part makes it a static storage by combining multiple files per query.

Seems great for blogs and marketing sites, especially if you've got a CDN in front.
