Nah, anyone associating with Epstein can get flushed down the toilet. Maybe it's a generational thing.

Let's hope you never wind up in the massive email history of a terrible person because people like you will wish you dead.

I never use Apple News but they often pop up among the apps that are using significant energy. I am wondering what does it really do on the background.

Surely that's not legal is it? Can the government force companies to include spyware?
dexterdog · 15 days ago
No, but they can tie it to the consideration of software and services contracts which has the same effect.

Biden appointed Lina Khan. "Both parties are the same" is lazy and unhelpful.
dexterdog · 21 days ago
Saying that I said both parties are the same is far lazier.

“Your margin will soon be my margin.”

The solution was/is and most likely will be antitrust but which administration will shatter the US tech market we are yet to see.

Well, both are 100 pct in the pocket so the only possible answer is a third entity which is highly unlikely.

I think somewhere along the way something has gone terribly wrong in the way we allocate capital to incentivize behavior. Somehow as a society we incentivize (aka distribute capital to) the people who educate our next generation and the people who care for our elders less than the people who smoke weed on podcasts and talk for hours into a camera or a microphone…

Those jobs don't scale at all so you can't have the ability for the top .001 pct make significant money

How does copyright work with recorded music?

The article mentions that Charlie (Bird) Parker's music is now public domain in most of the world (life + 70 years), but most of his records are collaborations with other artists like Dizzy Gillespie who died much later, less than 50 years ago. I also wonder if that even matters if the records are owned by corporations.

In those cases, how would I know if a record is public domain or not?

dexterdog · a month ago
You don't. It's all nonsense so unless you are planning on doing something official with the material just pirate it. Copyright went far beyond lunacy decades ago and should be ignored if possible.

I was hoping that this is how it would work for System76 -- when I bought the laptop they sold replacement batteries. Five years later I find myself needing a battery and they are unavailable -- not on System76's website, not online, nowhere. My only option is to either replace the laptop or buy a used one and take the battery from that, hoping that it's good.

For the last six months I've just been using a laptop as a mini pc with no battery.

dexterdog · a month ago
I had no idea about this. I don't see how anybody who is buying one of these because of the repair-ability would complete the purchase if they knew this. I also don't see how they can make all of their user-friendly claims if this is the case.

I really don't understand this take. A script that installs all required dependencies is fine if and only if you are dedicating a machine to immich. It probably requires some version of node, with possibly hidden dependencies on some python, it uses ffmpeg, so all related libraries and executables need to be there. You then have a couple separate DBs, all communicating together. Let's not talk about updates! What if you're skipping versions? Now your "simple install script" becomes a fragile behemoth. I would NOT consider this if it was non docker-native. Plus, I don't have a server with enough resources for a lot of VMs, with all of their overhead and complications, just to have one per service. Nowadays there are many ways to run a container not just the original docker.com software, and you can do that on pretty much any platform. Even Android now!

These things are a proxmox home lab user's lifeline. My only complaint is that you have to change your default host shell to bash to run them. You only have to do that for the initial container creation though.
