detritus commented on Carrier Landing in Top Gun for the NES   relaxing.run/blag/posts/t... · Posted by u/todsacerdoti

Reminds me a bit of the game Retaliator, when I was 12 a class mate earned himself a night of "pick your own time to go to bed at camp" because he could show the teacher how to land. [0, the landing is at the very end]. I think at the time nobody knew what key to hit to deploy the landing gear (and flaps, though I think you could land without flaps). And since it was all copied stuff there was no book, no internet...

Gosh, I miss the aesthetics of vector games of this era. My absolute favourite was Armour-Geddon (on the Amiga), which because I'd pirated it I barely had any clue what to do but.. it was still fun, and so beautiful. And fast!

I know there's Tiny Combat Arena from 'Microprose' but its development's taking a while. I'd dearly love to know if there's anything else of that contemporary ilk out there today.

I get a little paintbrush and paint the leaves of each dandelion with round-up - that ends up killing them but largely leaving other plants alone.
detritus · 11 days ago
I did much the same, but with a hypodermic syringe, on knotweed many years ago.

Yours is so much more.. tender though. Poor dandelions, but at least you made it personal!

Add a keyboard, and you would have piqued my interest.

I dont understand how ex-Nokia devs could have built a phone like the N900 and then just walked away from it for 15 years

detritus · 11 days ago
eh, I was a Smartphone ‘it's gotta have a keyboard!’ hold-out too, but I've long-since embraced the Swype or whatever it's called, style of input. It's fine enough for 90% of my engagement with the internet via a phone. Anything more in depth I'm on a computer with a physical keyboard anyway.

But yes, the N900 was pre-slidey-smartphone peak brilliance.

I can only speak for the UK but for quite a while now, McD's has become an uninviting experience, with miserable staff, menu screens that visibly tell you to hurry the f*k up and choose the product. Not to mention customers vying with delivery drivers for orders. I think the problem applies to all-income customers.

Also, £4.20 for a Double Bacon & Egg McMuffin is just ... no. Why?

I could swear it wasn't that long ago it was under £3.

For a fiver I can get a better 'real' Bacon & Egg bap from an independent.

It's curious that of all the famous American syndicated strips, only The Far Side, and maybe Garfield, seem to have bridged the Atlantic divide to the UK.

Maybe C&H and Peanuts were just too rooted in US suburban family culture. Dilbert had a niche following here and beyond that I struggle to even name another strip.

detritus · 25 days ago
Not my experience - my father had questionable taste in newspapers, but the daily express ran C&H and we had all of the compendia.

They are illegal now in the UK.
detritus · a month ago
'illegal' in that manufacturers add on a usb port and the basic board to tick the reusable check box.

I'm still seeing almost as many of these cast on the streets as I did a year ago.

Those of you who don't use Linux as a daily driver: why?

What do you need in Windows that is not possible in Linux? Its slowness to justify your 40-hour work week?

detritus · a month ago
Software that's unavailable on Linux? That I use literally all day, every day?

I get that's a car-aazy answer, but here I am.

It’s amazing tech, it’s just a solution looking for a problem.

It feels a bit like the original Segway’s over-engineered solution versus cheap Chinese hoverboards, then the scooters and e-bikes that took over afterwards.

Why would I be paying all this money for this realistic telepresence when my shitbox HP laptop from Walmart has a perfectly serviceable webcam?

detritus · a month ago
I always viewed the current generations of 'cheap Chinese hovebords' etc being a direct descendant of the Segway, and that Kamen and his believers weren't quite as ridiculous as we thought them at the time - they were just ahead of their time and expecting too much from too low a point in the technology curve.

I would look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabine_Hossenfelder before I took this too seriously
detritus · 2 months ago
This doesn't suggest much of consequence, other than a vaguely-implied smear?

I've watched Hossenfelder's videos for years and whilst yes - she might perhaps be overly critical of a lot of things - I don't at all accept that she has weird, conspirational leanings.
