About garbage collection:

Are there a lot of Unity/Godot devs unaware that their engines are using GC? I would assume they'd have accepted the cost of GC already.

Unreal devs I can understand having an issue with it though.

Can you explain? AFAIK Godot uses C++ under the hood which does not have garbage collection. Other languages such as C# and GDScript use bindings.

Another software project feels it’s necessary to dive into divisive politics when it should just make good software. It’s sad, really. Now what I think of when I hear „Zig“ is a community of self-important, immature and delusional people instead of thinking about the undeniable advantages of the Zig language.

Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwith to support anything better. Airpods are as far as you can push it with complete vertical stack control. The magic is in codecs and dynamic switching of them based on whether you are speaking or not.

Is it really that hard to increase the bandwidth in 2025 to get mic quality that doesn’t sound awful? Opus can be really efficient at low bitrates AFAIK.

What exactly is this? Windows application firewall? Network proxy I install on a separate computer? Is it available for other operating systems? I skimmed though the website and am already annoyed because I didn’t find answers to those simple questions.

tl;dr

To transfer patient data between doctors and (state) insurance companies, doctor‘s offices need to have a hardware VPN device. The system was implemented by the company „gematic“. A small number of companies produce these devices.

The certificates on these devices expire after five years. Now, instead of simply updating the certificates, the companies want the state and the doctors to buy new devices which costs around 400 million.

The CCC firstly explained that this is bullshit and a total waste of money and secondly showed that it is easy to update the devices. They could do it themselves but only need the private key from gematic.

The same thing for me with YouTube videos. I don’t want to sit through 10 endless minutes of bullshit, self-promotion, and approximately 5931 cuts for that single answer to my question. Drives me insane that more and more content is provided as videos only, and all the inefficiency that must bring.

Check the Sponsorblock extension for Firefox. It not only blocks sponsor segments but also has a „jump to highlight“ function which jumps directly to the answer of the (clickbait) video title.

Can someone please explain, without technical buzzwords, what Materialize is?

I checked the docs but they mention streaming DB, Timely and Differential Dataflow which I don't know either.

If people in Iran could find themselves in trouble for using Signal I'd strongly advise they avoid it and look for some other solution.

Ever since Signal started collecting and permanently storing sensitive user data in the cloud (your name, photo, number, a list of everyone you contact using Signal) it's become much more dangerous for people who want to protect themselves and the people they are in contact with. Because Signal insists on keeping your contacts in the cloud it's possible in some cases for someone to collect a list of your contacts simply by brute forcing a 4 digit pin.

It would be horrible to end up in trouble or see your friends and family hurt because Signal wasn't forthcoming about the fact that they were collecting your info and keeping it on their servers.

That’s some lazy FUD. But even if that were true and the contacts weren’t encrypted and PIN entry not rate limited: What do you propose as an alternative?
