Maybe similar to the imperceptibility of using the name of a famous bear in a certain country, there is an upcoming imperceptibility of using the name of a certain dish in another.

Not convincing. I was hoping it would go down the xslt path, which is a lost art. I despised and loved xslt at the same time, and there’s no question it was an artful enterprise using it.

I spent some time reading about Gas Town to see if I could understand what Stevey was trying to accomplish. I think he has some good ideas in there, actually - it really does seem like he's thought a bit about what coding in the future might look like. Unfortunately, it's so full of esoteric language and vibecoded READMEs that it is quite difficult to get into. The most concerning thing is that Stevey seems totally unaware of this. He writes about how when he tried to explain this to people they just stared at him like they were idiots, and so they must all be wrong -- that's a bit worrying, from a health and psychosis angle.

There’s an acquaintance here in Australia that has built something similar without the crazy terminology and it is pretty solid.

Quoting: “ What I’m describing is different. I’ll call it Vibe Discovery: you don’t know what you’re building. The requirements themselves are undefined. You’re not just discovering implementation - you’re discovering what the product should be.

The distinction matters:”

What is it with this pattern of phrases that screams LLM to me? Whenever I come upon this pattern I stop reading further.

cgio commented on Apple is fighting for TSMC capacity as Nvidia takes center stage   culpium.com/p/exclusiveap... · Posted by u/speckx

It's ridiculous that a trillion dollar company feels beholden to a supplier. With that kind of money, it should be trivial to switch. People forget Nvidia didn't even exist 35 years ago. It would probably take like 3 to 5 years to catch up with the benefit of hindsight and existing talent and tools?

And anyway consumers don't really need beefy devices nowadays. Running local LLM on a smartphone is a terrible idea due to battery life and no graphics card; AI is going to be running on servers for quite some time if not forever.

It's almost as if there is a constant war to suppress engineer wages... That's the only variable being affected here which could benefit from increased competition.

If tech sector is so anti-competitive, the government should just seize it and nationalize it. It's not capitalism when these megacorps put all this superficial pressure but end up making deals all the time. We need more competition, no deals! If they don't have competition, might as well have communism.

It can be interpreted a different way too. Apple is just a channel for TSMCs technology. Also the cost to build a fab that advanced, in say a 3 year horizon, let alone immediately available, is not one even Apple can commit to without cannibalising its core business.

Do you take down all of your projects and then bring them back up at the new version? If not, then you have times at which the change is only partially complete.
cgio · a month ago
I would see a potentially more liberal use of atomic, that if the repo state reflects the totality of what I need to get to new version AND return to current one, then I have all I need from a reproducibility perspective. Human actions could be allowed in this, if fully documented. I am not a purist, obviously.

I’m wondering why these companies are so hyped and valued at these astronomical levels. Honestly, nothing really impresses me enough to think, “Wow, this company actually deserves that kind of valuation”.

These valuations are to the point point that this looks too close to money laundering, just like buying art.

I hear you, and mostly share the point of view, but that’s what people were saying about the instagram valuation too.

lol I never made that connection — in Turkish, zero is sıfır, which does sound a lot like cipher. Also, password is şifre, which again sounds similar. Looking online, apparently the path is sifr (Arabic, meaning zero) -> cifre (French, first meaning zero, then any numeral, then coded message) -> şifre (Turkish, code/cipher)
cgio · 2 months ago
The Turkish password word may be the same used for signature? I suspect so, because in Greek we have the Greek word for signature but also a Turkish loan word τζίφρα (djifra).

Sure, it's just a bit of an "old" term that I wasn't sure the young'uns on HN would understand :)
