From a completely technical standpoint, is systemd really better than SysVInit? I ask this question in good faith. I have used both and had no problems with either, although for personal preference, I am more traditional and favor SysVInit.

Not sure how much it could help, but is there a possibility you connect the SSD to another machine with the same architecture, run Windows install in it, then once Windows is installed and running, shut down, move the SSD back to the Snapdragon kit and attempt to boot? Just an idea...

I have 104872 karma on HN. You may find https://news.ycombinator.com/leaders and https://news.ycombinator.com/bestcomments interesting. However, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to sort one's own comments by ranking. One of these days I'm going to scrape mine and see if I can write the "rules of HN" for highly upvoted comments.

One is: HN does not like jokes, unless you put an explanation in the comment as well.

I thought I had read you had 1048576 of karma and thought: what a coincidence: 1 megabyte worth of karma.

BTW, this comment is supposed to be joke-ish.

What is really blocking the move for me is zScaler, Zoom (they may exist on Linux, not sure about how integrated they are) but especially Outlook (the client). The OWA version is subpar and without it I cannot function in a work environment.

I had a similar issue, but I ended up installing Debian and running Windows 10 as a virtual machine with VirtualBox. The webcam can be accessed as if were installed on the guest OS and haven't had a problem with Zoom or Teams. Just sharing in case it helps.

For me the strange and unproductive direction Windows is going towards in encapsulated in the right-click menu in the file manager (Explorer). 11 has a shiny new menu that shows up when you right click. But it is a new coat of paint over the ones from 10 or before. Additional options from for example 7zip don't show up in it. You have to click "more options" at the bottom which them reveals the old menu. There is no benefit to the new menu except for the fact that it is aesthetically more "modern" to its detriment.

Exactly. This is the best example of what Windows 11 is. I have the feeling that Microsoft is trying to bring change at the same time that it cannot, and has to come up with workarounds like this one. This would explain the Settings panel like someone mentioned in this thread. Another thing that I dislike (with all due respect to developers of React) is this migration to React and Reactish behavior of Windows. We have been fine with Win32 after so many years. Why change that, other than wanting to stay "relevant" or "modern"? Just my opinion.

I see comments suspecting this list is AI-generated. That might be true. But ironically, the practice of "building from scratch" is the best antidote to AI dependency.

Writing from Japan, we call this process "Shugyo" (austere training). A master carpenter spends years learning to sharpen tools, not because it's efficient, but to understand the nature of the steel.

Building your own Redis or Git isn't about the result (which AI can give you instantly). It is about the friction. That friction builds a mental model that no LLM can simulate.

Whether this post is marketing or not, the "Shugyo" itself is valid.

Thank you for sharing. I have always found Japanese focus into the smallest detail as something worth of the greatest admiration. And I am always trying to learn from those ways to apply it into my life.

Very nice game. Barely made it to getting to the office and receiving orders from a manager. I could completely relate to the "hot desk" experience, that's something that would irritate me. I do not claim to be in the spectrum, nor have any diagnosis to claim or reject it. Again, congratulations for the game and the feeling.

Just adding this comment to say congratulations and how impressed I am by your project! I've been an OS Dev fan since my teens and it feels great to see this achievement come to life. I am a little curious to know how the graphics subsystem is initialized. I wish you the best of success.

Call my a cynic but this feels like a free way for Google to pull more data for training.

An interesting point, perhaps it's just me, but my initial reaction to this was that, for purposes of comparison, the volume of "usable" or maybe inhabitable land be measured instead, as opposed to the volume of the entire planet including mantle, core, etc. this graphic seems very prone to misinterpretation and usage as a memetic weapon against globalization, as it is.
byte_0 · 2 years ago
I completely agree with you. Let's add to the fact that volume, being three-dimensional, is being represented on two dimensions (graphics on a computer screen), which might cause some loss of perspective, fundamental for comparison. Perhaps a better way to represent it would have been the volume of inhabitable land (as you suggest) vs the volume of available water but extrapolated to two dimensions?
