''However, a proposal to include the so-called "right to disconnect" - the legal right to switch off work-related messages and devices outside office hours - was rejected by Portuguese MPs.''

Didn't we already had this right in EU?

atticmanatee · 4 years ago
Yes, hence why a redundant law was rejected.

Wait what? When did that deal happen? Seems like an interesting piece of political science history i never heard of.

On the actual books page ( http://www.instarbooks.com/remember-the-internet.html ) i love the form field title animation. I thought it was just a gif, but the form fields are clickable.

I think the idea of gathering these stories and sharing them is a good one, and certainly of value. That said, asking for 10$ per ebook may be a bit too much.

Best of luck to them.

They really remind me more of Android widgets, which the article also mentions. Those were a killer feature for me for Android.
atticmanatee · 6 years ago
They might have the same name, might even turn into the same thing, but right now, they’re Live Tiles.

The only action taken when you tap in one is open the app.

Android widgets have much more functionality.

My favourite cruise ship fiasco this week has been the newly imposed rule in New Zealand - they can’t dock, go away. So hours before the ban was imposed one docked and dumped all it’s passengers in the capital. https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120298962/...
atticmanatee · 6 years ago
You think that's bad?

A cruise with 200 people was denied port in Portugal, so the ship went to Spain, dropped all the passengers and they took busses to enter Portugal.

One of the many reasons why the border is being shut

atticmanatee commented on Europe’s old money mingles with tech startups   wsj.com/articles/europes-... · Posted by u/hhs

I have worked for almost 15 years in SV at multiple tech companies (FANG and non-FANG) and at all the places, I have seen health insurance, at least 15 vacation days per year, 9-10 holidays and generous salary to pay off the student debt.

So your comment just reads like a somewhat inaccurate meme.

atticmanatee · 6 years ago
Here's the thing: most companies in Europe also provide private health insurance, almost double of those 15 days and more or less the same holidays (which are state defined and if not provided, must be paid at 150% to 200% the normal rate - depends between country).

This, of course, does not account for the entire gap in wages between both sides of the Atlantic, but it does weigh on it.

So? Decisions and policies change. Just because someone decided something a few months ago doesn't mean they can't make a new decision now.

I have worked on many projects where pragmatism is the only way forward, rather than a rewrite. Often the software focused answer is a rewrite of the platform, but in the context of the business the right answer is often deep understanding and maintenance.

Legacy software at first glance can seem unruly and hard to understand which gives devs a kneejerk reaction to rewrite it. But make sure you give your developers enough time to sit down with the code and understand it. Given some time to really grok the platform's idioms often you can empathize with the previous devs work and figure out how to work within their framework.

You have to take the risk of refactoring into account as well. There is no guarantee you'll end up with better software, rather than just different software. You could end up throwing away years of edge case handling and feature development just so the core product runs on some new technology the new team is familiar with.

atticmanatee · 6 years ago
So much this. I started a new job in a company that is redesigning the product, but instead of a complete rewrite, managers decided it was best to keep as much as possible from the previous iteration (it's an iOS app).

We're getting close to release, so we have less pressing bugs and no new features to implement, so myself and a team mate decided to take a week to perhaps refactor some of the code and update it to Swift. After said week we reach the conclusion that management made the right decision: The written code handled so many edge cases that if we were to rewrite it, even converting from objc to swift could ignore some edge cases.

Yeah, I'm a little annoyed that there isn't an option for "no really, always allow". I understand that there's good privacy reasons to keep asking -- but I'm quite aware that a weather app will need access to my location, and I'm okay with that.
atticmanatee · 6 years ago
There is an Always option. It just doesn’t show on the pop up. But if you go to settings -> privacy -> location services you see a list of apps, and if the app registers for always, it will have that option

It never ceases to amaze me how Twitter is so unprepared for anything they do.

This was something Facebook did a few years ago Even Google+ (rest in peace) had a similar feature. How could they have forgotten that dead people may have used their platform, and living relatives would be upset?

Either Twitter is completely run by amateurs - since its inception - or by people who just don’t care. Which one is worst, I wonder?
