Is this why my grandma put oil in the pasta pot?
askvictor · 10 days ago
Possibly, though most likely because of long standing myths. I've never had a pasta pot boil over, but I cook it without a lid; maybe with a lid it makes a difference. I might also try it next time I boil potatoes, which I usually cook with a lid, and have a tendency to froth over if the heat isn't just right.

yes. It also keeps the pasta from sticking together as quickly after you drain it. But an Italian friend made a face and said "it will keep the sauce from adhering to the pasta!!!' so... yeah.

It's useful to add oil after cooking pasta if you're going to save it for later; otherwise you definitely don't want to. I've never had pasta foam over as I cook without a lid (though haven't tried it with oil and a lid); it's also completely possible to cook it without any heat; once the pasta is added, bring back to boil, then turn off the heat, cover, and let it sit until it's done. It only needs about 80C to cook, which the remnant heat will provide.

Also, (and I learnt this much too late in my life), cook the pasta until a few minutes before it's done, and _finish cooking in the sauce_. This is what makes the sauce adhere. Keep a cup of the starchy pasta water to add in case it needs to be loosened a bit.

Been trying to get into overnight oats (home made) for breakfast but its been hard to hit protein numbers, even with protein powder.
askvictor · 11 days ago
How much protein do you actually need though? If you're not using it immediately (i.e. shortly after exercise) it's wasted.

So, me putting butter on my oatmeal is not gross and decadent, but actually the new health food craze?
askvictor · 11 days ago
I make steel cut oats in the pressure cooker; you need to put some fat in there to stop it bubbling while it's cooking, so butter has a physical purpose there too. And also tastes delicious.

It’s largely true. I believe Steve Jobs had some talk about this phenomenon; basically, at some point, the scale of an organization means the product people make less of an impact than the sales / finance people, and they slowly take over.

Then over the span of a few decades, what’s left is a shallow organization without real innovation.

Intel and Boeing are good examples of this.

And, indeed, Apple.

I don't think it's as easy as you're suggesting. GPS L1 jamming has been done routinely enough but the satellite bands (X/Ku/Ka) appear to be much more difficult to pull off.

Iran was reported to have mobile units with a fairly short range that constantly roamed around, only hitting 2 of the 3 bands (Ku/Ka). They're also reported to have received mobile Russian military units capable of jamming all 3 (X/Ku/Ka) over a much wider area. (I'm not actually clear the extent to which X band is associated with either Starlink or Starshield. Starshield also reportedly operates to at least some extent in parts of the S band. [0])

So the technology clearly exists but it doesn't seem to be something you can trivially throw together in your basement. That's quite unlike (for example) a cell phone jammer which a hobbyist can cheaply and easily assemble at home. I assume the extreme directional specificity of the antennas plays a large part in that.

Couldn't they target each starlink satellite for jamming as it flies overhead? The sat would still send fine, but you could effectively kill the antenna?

My first pass through the title was "Those windshield wipers shouldn't need to be internet-connected."

Thankfully, the article did clear that up, but the fact that my brain didn't even think, "that's a stupid idea that no one would buy that" is a bit depressing.

askvictor · 16 days ago
But then how would you alert people that their wiper blades are wearing down, and automatically ship them new ones?

And this is why I'm still running Win10 LTSC. No bloat, super fast, still gets security updates.
askvictor · 16 days ago
In theory, this was a security patch, so you're still at risk of MS pushing a problematic patch to Win10

I like the direction youre moving. Would a drag and drop editor for Python syntax be useful for a project like this?
askvictor · a month ago
Having taught schoolkids both python and scratch, I feel that typing is better, but having the blocks visibly coloured as in scratch would be really useful
