amsterdorn commented on Egg prices are soaring. Are backyard chickens the answer?   civileats.com/2025/02/18/... · Posted by u/greenie_beans

The letter from Farm Action, linked at the top of the article, is pretty compelling in making their case.

A few highlights:

> As a result of the smaller flock, egg production has dropped slightly from 8.1 billion eggs per month in 2021 to 7.75 billion eggs per month in December 2024. Importantly, however, per capita production of eggs in the U.S. has not dipped below per capita consumption of eggs in any year between 2022 and the present. Meanwhile, the total value of egg production has risen significantly, from $8.8 billion in 2021 to $19.4 billion in 2022 and $17.9 billion in 2023.

Note the $17.9B 2023 figure obviously doesn't include the most recent price increases.

> Instead of using the windfall profits they are earning from record egg prices to rebuild or expand their egg-laying flocks, the largest egg producers are using them to buy up smaller rivals and further consolidate market power.

> Almost all shell eggs are marketed through contracts between producer firms and chain buyers where egg prices are based on weekly wholesale quotes published by Urner Barry, an industry consulting and data analytics firm. According to leading industry commentator Simon M. Shane, this convergence "on a single commercial price discovery system constitutes an impediment to a free market," with the benchmark prices released by Urner Barry potentially serving to amplify price swings led by the largest-volume producers and to prevent independent, competitive decision making by others.

I love the Netherlands, and not just for their livable street design, I just wish they food weren't so bland. They make even German cuisine look adventurous in comparison.

Their savory dishes aren't great (looking at you stamppot) but they do sweets well! Poffertjes, oliebollen, stroopwafels, etc.

Nice tool! Some feedback:

- The subtitle telling me I can "stretch [my] time off from 20 days to 42 days" is quite misleading. This tool doesn't magically give me more vacation days.

- Much of the page isn't helpful (in NL there are 6 consecutive months without holidays), would suggest only showing months where "stretching" is possible.

I'm just getting an angry fruit salad of squares in most places with some edgy comments thrown in.

Basically, OpenStreetMap meets 4chan.

Yep, I don't like it. Amplifies racist and ignorant voices.

Technically it is an interesting project.

But anyone who has visited the museum will find it weird. It is very different. The building architecture is very different, there are thousands more works in the exposition, and the order of the works is very different, ...

I've visited the museum many times and I find it to be excellent!

It is convenient to see a preview of the generated code without having to copy/paste it to your IDE and switch to the browser.

But I see it as mostly useful in the beginning when you are starting, or want to create standalone components. It would be great if it was implemented as a plugin to an IDE and could understand and modify an existing project.

amsterdorn · a year ago
By suggesting it's "mostly useful in the beginning" you are admitting that at some point they will copy+paste it to their project. So the convenience factor is a moot point.

I see the value, I just think that's an unrealistic price given the current features.

It's the authors choice to set the price, and they do offer a free plan. For you maybe the value isn't there, but that doesn't mean a "GPT-4 wrapper" can't provide others value. And I give credit to the author for going with $30 instead of something silly like $6 because trying to build a business on $6/mo is a much harder than on $30/mo.

You think the chance that 5 people think $6 is a reasonable price is lower than one person thinking $30 is?

$30 is far too expensive for a GPT-4 wrapper.

I'd much rather pay for ChatGPT, run Vite locally and prompt "You are a tailwind assistant that generates CSS..."
