I wonder why cars and trains don’t use tech like this to keep passengers stable, even when the road/track has bumps. Something like this, built into shock absorbers, could be revolutionary for transport.

I would say cost, imagine the R&D of the part itselft, but the cost of it in maintenance to the final user. I believe citroen had electromagnetic shocks in the 90's and it didn't catch much momentum but if you see the videos of it working, its exactly like you said, smooth as heck drive throwgh bumps.

My mind: (1) Open that page for about 3 seconds, (2) go back to HN, (3) skim through the comments, (4) realizing the irony, (5) commenting on that

Maybe I'm being thick, but security in what sense? That someone could rip up pavers?
altairTF · 2 years ago
In the sense of getting grip when braking

It's time to hit piles of salvaged scrap in Foxhole with a hammer.

Do it. The war effort depends on it!

It reminds me of the epiphany I had while playing strategy games - it began to feel like mucking around with a very large spreadsheet or database, and then it was difficult to see what separated my hours playing them from actual work.

Honestly, no. Lately I regularly get videos with less than 100 views (sometimes as few as 1) usually someone’s homemade music or lately someone driving a car on a track. It’s not the majority of my recommendations at all, but I’d never see stuff like this recommended before a few months ago.

I believe I read somewhere that they changed this a few months ago, along the lines of promoting new content or something. For me, I've been 100% uninterested so far.

back in college I was living an a room that I rent from a nice old lady trying to make some extra money. Due to it being a small space and other factors like noise and sun light, my bed end up next to the door to the bathroom. I got pink eye at least three times that year, before I was able to get a better place.

Ever since myth busters my toothbrush almost always have a cap on it and I always close the lid before flushing the toilet.

I knew I had this info from some place, and it was the MythBusters episode! Thanks for the reminder. I always put the lid down because of that episode but was unable to remember it. It just became natural

I didn't excuse their behaviour.

If you actually care about reducing crime you look at the evidence. E.g. https://equalitytrust.org.uk/crime

So, are people like animals that start going feral when they see someone in a way better status than they are? If that's the case, and this article suggests there is psychological evidence to support it, it poses a serious problem for the whole society. Are we really going to assign a maximum value to people's wealth?

Many porch pirates have decent jobs and plenty of money. They do it because they're greedy, it's easy and the penalties for getting caught are light. We need to revise our criminal code to apply harsher penalties to this kind of behavior. Porch piracy isn't a crime of 'passion', the people who do it presently think that the rewards are worth the risks and this can be fixed by escalating the risks.

Being caught is the problem. If there's a 100% chance of getting caught, like grabbing the box while the owner is right there talking to a police officer, that deters this kind of crime

Yeah. That something that happened during that period of time was:

- Stable jobs with good salaries

- Home Ownership

- Salaries that increased as much as profits when productivity raised.

It was a good time, they told me.
