alphakappa commented on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh   omc345.substack.com/p/fro... · Posted by u/lightningcable

> Like what?

Like smartphones with an entire interface focused on multitouch. There wasn’t another one of those “proven in the market” before the iPhone.

Or, you know, the first mass-marketed personal computer with a GUI, and the first successful one with a mouse (Lisa, Mac).

The Kinect example is nonsensical, it wasn’t as an authentication device. Even if they used the same team and technology, so much more went into it (like the Secure Enclave) than simply repackaging what already existed.

Just look at the size of Kinect and compare it with faceid embedded in a phone. The word “just” is doing a lot of work in the parent comment.

If a country enters and leaves accords and organizations on a whim, at what point does it become a liability to have that country be at the table at all?

> How do you square that with the modern Catholic church’s systemic support of sexual abuse of minors?

I'm the first to criticize Catholicism given a chance, but ... I'm not sure that's actually a valid claim to make outside of the particular case of ... I think it was New York in the 1990s, which is a statistical outlier (at least in English-speaking countries).

There are a lot of Catholics and therefore it's unavoidable for a lot of pedophiles to be Catholics, but the same is true about teachers. Can you reasonably say "how can you support the school system given that teachers systematically sexually abuse minors"?

Remember, there are 4 kinds of lies:

  - lies
  - damned lies
  - statistics
  - things somebody said on the Internet

That’s an odd comparison to make. The ‘school system’ isn’t a monolithic system that is actively refusing to acknowledge or take action against sexual predators. Is there an example of a school district that has been shielding predators on an ongoing basis and refusing to take remedial action?
alphakappa commented on What is "founder mode"?   tomblomfield.com/post/763... · Posted by u/nqureshi

Feels like I am taking crazy pills when I read about this stuff. Like 1500 words that boil down to "make sure you're paying attention to whether or not people are doing a good job".
alphakappa · a year ago
It's also crazy that people are buying into the idea of 'Founder Mode' when Airbnb is one of the companies that is very much riding on the moat it created a while back while not doing anything much that can even remotely be called customer-obsessive (which is the lesson they could really learn from Steve Jobs)

This is great. You are missing True Nutrition.

Also if you could add a simple way to reset the filters, that would be great.

alphakappa commented on Apple introduces M4 chip   apple.com/newsroom/2024/0... · Posted by u/excsn

Apple usually massively exaggerates their tech spec comparison - is it REALLY half the power use of all times (so we'll get double the battery life) or is it half the power use in some scenarios (so we'll get like... 15% more battery life total) ?
alphakappa · a year ago
Any product that uses this is more than just the chip, so you cannot get a proportional change in battery life.

Worth mentioning the depaving efforts in Mexico City, particularly in Pedregal in an effort to replenish the ground water. In this case, for the lava bed, not earth and plants.

Indeed! I was in SF for a few months. Finding affordable food was insanely hard. Fast food was both really cheap and everywhere. Fresh produce and basics like bread were expensive or hard to find, a long bus / tube drive away. Of course it's much easier to fall into that trap of shitty and cheap food.

Where I live the balance is much easier. Vegetables, fruit, meat, ... it's all relatively cheap and easy to get, there's supermarkets and bakeries everywhere. Fast food is relatively expensive, so you get something to think about: (expensive+unhealthy but easy) || (cheap+healthy but you need to cook)

Curious to know where in SF you lived. Generally there’s bodegas all over the place and you can find fresh produce there. Not to mention, the city has good bakeries everywhere. Fast food (the well known chains) are quite hard to find in most neighborhoods.
