How does this make them rotten to the core?

This is a business. They invented the game. They host it. How are they rotten for wanting to make money from it?

These aren't real objects. They are entry in a Valve database. I can't understand why people get emotionally, much less financially, invested in it.

Humans are social-emotional beings who assign “irrational” value to things for social signaling and emotional (self-)gratification.

You understand that you just said "they're the monsters for using human shields, but not us for shooting through the human shields", right?

Make no mistake, its 100% a war crime to use civilians as human shields. But that doesn't magically absolve the IDF of also committing a war crime. And if they can't meet their military objectives without committing war crimes, maybe that's a sign. In any case, bombing a hospital to kill a terrorist is a very efficient tactic if your goal is to create more terrorists. If you learn nothing else from the UK's administration of Mandatory Palestine, learn that.

Not a lawyer, but my understanding is civilian casualties are not unlawful (according to international law) when the target is legitimate (on the theory that it is otherwise impossible to legally fight a war with an enemy that hides behind its citizens). To be clear this is not to say war crimes are not also happening.

I noticed you interface with the native code via ctypes. I think cffi is generally preferred (eg, https://cffi.readthedocs.io/en/stable/overview.html#api-mode...). Although you'd have more flexibility if you build your own python extension module (eg using pybind), which will free you from a simple/strict ABI. Curious if this strict separation of C & Python was a deliberate design choice.

Nowadays, with more and more economic output coming from knowledge work (IP), this depreciation and amortization approach feels hopelessly out of date. I don't know what a good replacement is, but I know software and IP more generally shouldn't be treated at all like a material good.

monads are the MCP of functional programming—no one really knows what they are but everyone writes an article about them using analogies that break when you actually use them in practice.

What is MCP?

The hard problem of consciousness is the same as the problem of describing to someone a color they’ve never seen before (i.e. the problem of qualia).

Personally I think the information contained in qualia is finite and therefore physical but who knows

aklein · a year ago
TBH, I don’t really understand why this is a problem. An explanation is not an experience; it cannot provide to the human brain the same information. Suppose you neurologically induced an experience of seeing that new color without “really” seeing it - surely this would be sufficient to communicate qualia? (And if not, surely it’s just a matter of adjusting the inducement to some degree).

Speaking as someone with a current viral respiratory infection of some kind that was just prescribed Benzonatate and Albuterol, there needs to be a much more effective treatment for a bad dry cough. It’s pure misery.
