I shared this last month, but I’m still having a lot of fun working on it.

I made a daily word puzzle called Tiled Words.

https://tiledwords.com

Currently about 2,000 people play every day and I’ve released 59 puzzles!

One feature I’m excited about is crowdsourcing puzzles. Today’s puzzle is a “community puzzle” made entirely from clues that players submitted! I plan to do this every week or two.

I wrote about launching and the first month of puzzles if you want to learn more!

I just released the first alpha version of my RISC-V hobby kernel, written in Ada: https://github.com/ajxs/straylight

My next step is documenting how all of the subsystems work (such as virtual memory, allocators, drivers, etc.), then lay the project to rest. I don't have any grand ambitions for the kernel. The project was just a labor of love, and a way to learn some interesting things! Hopefully some of the documentation can serve as learning material for other people interested in osdev.

I honestly cannot believe that I have been listening to Death Metal my entire life, and no one has ever used the term “coffin liquor” in a song.

For what it's worth, Morpheus Descends had a song called 'Submerged in Adipocere', which is a similar kind of thing.

Really impressive work! I'm not sure I like the perspective any better than the original game, but the lighting makes for a nice aesthetic!

I'll take this opportunity to mention another engine-upgrade to a classic Origin game that got me excited: https://github.com/Howard-Day/WCUnity

Rise your hand if you remember how long you had to tinker around to get enough EMS to load the game plus sound card drivers loaded into memory when being in DOS!

:-D

I definitely remember the collection of boot disks I used to load the right autoexec.bat/config.sys settings for the Ultima and Wing Commander games, and how long I spent tuning these settings. I was just a kid then, but I remember the whole exercise being pretty complicated!

Dillo is hands down the best ultra lightweight browser ever developed in my opinion. I had a Toshiba Tecra that I got from Goodwill when I had absolutely no money whatsoever in my college days, And it was at least 15 years out of date as a laptop even when I first got it. I installed Puppy Linux on it, and I had Dillo as the browser. Its ability to bring rapid web browsing to old hardware is without equal.

I still use a modern version of it now on a Pine Tab 2 tablet, which has slow enough hardware that you want something like Dillo to make it feel snappy. I just make sure to bookmark lightweight websites that are most agreeable to Dillo's strip down versions of web pages.

It's one of the reasons I feel like Linux on the desktop in the 00s and 2010s had the superpower of making ancient hardware nearly up to par with modern hardware or at least meaningfully closing the gap.

How does it compare with NetSurf? Whenever I'm setting up Linux, I usually start with NetSurf to download the other requirements. I'll have to give Dillo a look.

Within the basic "123" ASM demo, I get that x10 - Becomes 0x00000123 as we are taking the integer of x0 and applying 123 to end of it but why is the sp (x2) register at 0x40100000?

What is that sp? Is it important? Why isn't that at 0x000000? Why isn't that explained? That's when I get lost.

ajxs · 2 months ago
'sp' is the 'stack pointer' register. There's an explanation of the stack later in the guide: https://dramforever.github.io/easyriscv/#the-stack

Thank you for finding this! Depili does great work! In another comment I mentioned that I've been working on the Casio CZ-101, which uses the NEC μPD7810 processor. Depili created a processor spec for the μCOM-87 architecture, which I've continued working on in this PR: https://github.com/NationalSecurityAgency/ghidra/pull/7930

Seems like a good place to mention The Usual Suspects, a group that has built emulation of the Motorola DSP5630 and associated hardware to allow playable virtual instruments.

These guys do amazing work! I wish Korg hadn't beat them to the MicroKorg VST though. I've used the MicroKorg extensively in music over the years, and would have loved an accurate VST. Unfortunately the filter in Korg's VST doesn't quite match the original, and I can't recreate some of my patches. For understandable reasons these guys aren't going to step on Korg's toes and compete with an actual commercial product.
