You can just look at their website -- it's surprisingly in depth even with their targeting systems and stuff. It's wild how open they are about it.

Anyone knows about a good Dropbox alternative? That supports Linux
nazgulsenpai · a month ago
I haven't used it personally but I read about it before I decided to DIY, but MEGA has Linux client.

The idiosyncrasies of Ruby, like Perl and JavaScript, lead to a certain kind of brain damage that make it difficult to build correct mental models of computing that can then generalize to other languages.

From my own personal experience I'd add Visual Basic to that list.

It's multiplayer games with anti-cheat that are the ones not supported (with developers now having to go out of their way to turn OFF support for Linux); everything else works fine. If you're only into singleplayer (like me), games often run better on Linux.

To expand on this and provide some examples, I've recently played Wuthering Waves, Tower of Fantasy, The First Descendant, Phantasy Star Online 2, Black Desert, Lost Ark, Throne & Liberty, probably others I'm forgetting, all of which contain anti-cheat of some variety and all on Linux.

There are some that don't support Linux and likely never will like Valorant or Call of Duty, and even fewer that dropped Linux support like Apex Legends.

Anecdote: I grew up in a poor family, that was single parent for my teenage years. I dropped out of high school when my son was born and I was 17. I never went to college. I was, however, a lifelong nerd and by mid-20s was able to get a foot-in-the-door job in IT. I'm 40 now and have been doing my dream job for almost 8 years. My current position was for a job that required a degree on paper. During my interview (all of them actually) I was honest about education, but also work experience and personal interest in the field, and got the position. That was 2.5 years ago and I hope to retire here.

I'm sure there was some luck involved, but just having a singular focus on computer adjacent fuckery, I managed to build a pretty successful career being 100% self taught.

No wonder the statement from Video Games Europe[0] in response to the Stop Killing Games initiative was laughed at from every corner of the internet. It didn't say anything unexpected but just underlined why these types of preservation initiatives are so important. Should Abernic ship devices loaded with illegal ROMs? Probably not. But to prosecute a customer who bought the product legally for it is a sad joke.

nazgulsenpai · 2 months ago
Core memory unlocked... When I was ~10-12, I asked my dad (who knew nothing but thought he knew everything about computers) how to make programs for Windows because I couldn't in QBasic. His answer was "with C++!". He came home with a book Learn C++ In 24 Hours that had Turbo C++ on a single 3.5" floppy disk. Naturally, that did not work, but I still had fun failing to compile every program I attempted to write.

That is only because there is barely any open source software for Linux that is backed by cloud services.

Now install Spotify, VSCode, Steam for Linux and you will see the same kind of chatter with backend services.

"Software I install" is a different metric than the "software that is part of the operating system itself".
