I try to boycott them as much as possible. I thought the boycott nestle thing was just a weird Reddit thing until actually reading about this company. It’s pretty sickening.

What blew my mind was how most of the food industry is pretty much owned by about eight corporations.

Chances are you're still buying Nestle. You can check here.

Come try Odin!
doublerabbit · a day ago
I've been doing theory and really want to myself.

Time escapes me before I get a chance to type Hello World. Working in front of a screen eight hours a day leaves me exhausted that the least things I want to do is code more on my day off.

Although wanting to dive in to WASM has been a priority and checking Odin for wasm their 3D model example is super cool.

May just have to take a poke. TCL for web frontend; Erlang for DB and potentially Odin for wasm? This could be a cool mix.

I’ve probably watched Hackers over a hundred times. My all time favourite movie. My first crush as a young teenager was Burn. It led to a career in software. So many kindred spirits on this thread - makes me smile.

And after 30+ years of watching Hackers, it only occurred to me recently that the biggest noob in the movie Joey beat the Gibson, twice. Sure he had assistance the second time, but still poetic imho.

Hack the planet <3

You’re in the butter zone now, baby!

When he was alive a lot of people said Epstein was really smart.

But I have read some of his emails, and all of the ones I have seen are full of spelling, punctuation, grammar and capitalization errors. I would not gotten out of sixth grade if I wrote like that.

doublerabbit · 3 days ago
An email is an email. I used to talk to contacts like that all the time and they did too. These are quick interchanges with folk.

The grammar police as well as PC became a thing and now everyone is expected to construct paragraphs of text without any grammatical errors otherwise you're mobbed and lynched.

Just because you're expecting full pronunciation doesn't mean others do. I'd rather write with laziness and short hand than having to punctuate a whole paragraph and bore the person to death like this paragraph.

The same would apply for any number of hosts. Hetzner/OVH are cheap, but as your own numbers show the location price gap is more than sufficient to cover the costs of servers.

In fact you can colocate with Hetzner too, and you'd get a similar price gap - the lower cost of real-estate is a large part of the reason why they can be as cheap as they are.

Data centre operations is a real estate play - to the point that at least one UK data centre operator is owned by a real estate investment company.

Thanks. I hadn't seen it as such and you're right. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

Where I feel that data has become a commodity in that I can sell your username and email for a few pence, I would rather prefer to have my own hardware in my own possession and that any request of it has to go to me, nor some server provider.

For what I can expand upon, not web applications per-se. They displayed management pages accessible via browser for different departments to manage, resource management, statistics, estimated costs and calculations.

The main usage were on back office tooling such as reporting back job queues, status of specific jobs, load balancing and the likes.

The main reason not to colocate is if you're somewhere with high real estate costs... E.g Hetzner managed servers competes on price w/co-location for me because I'm in London.
doublerabbit · 4 days ago
I colocate in London, a single server / firewall comes to around £5k a year. I also colocate two other servers in some northern UK location in some industrial estate for £2k as my backups. I've never enjoyed the cloud and dedicated server's have their own caveats too.

Budget hosts such as Hetzner/OVH have been known to suddenly pull the plug for no reason.

My kit is old, second hand old (Cisco UCS 220 M5, 2xDell somethings) and last night I just discovered I can throw in two NVIDIA T4's and turn it in to a personal LLM.

I'm quite excited having my own colocated server with basic LLM abilities. My own hardware with my own data and my own cables. Just need my own IP's now.

> Apple bought out all the jail breakers > Denuvo did for the game crackers

Do you have sources for these statements?

doublerabbit · 4 days ago
Like anything in that field its more NDA, antidotal.

> in 2018, the prominent Denuvo cracker known as "Voksi" (of REVOLT) was arrested in Bulgaria following a criminal complaint from Denuvo.

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/denuvo-has-sued-revolts-found...

That's how you get off such charges. I'll work for you, if you drop charges. There was a reddit post I can't find when EMPRESS had one of their episodes where she was asked if she wanted to work for. It's happened in the cracking scene before.

> The jailbreaking community is fractured, with many of its former members having joined private security firms or Apple itself. The few people still doing it privately are able to hold out for big payouts for finding iPhone vulnerabilities. And users themselves have stopped demanding jailbreaks, because Apple simply took jailbreakers’ best ideas and implemented them into iOS.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/iphone-jailbreak-life-death-...

And from the jail break community discord.

I started working in the 10's and I have never met a single developer who actively works with Perl.

Sometimes I wonder whether Perl left a huge code base behind, like COBOL did, but I suspect it didn't, mostly due to the fact that Perl is a dynamically typed language used mainly for web development and sysadmin scripting.

Perl unlike Java, which had no serious alternative in its niche, unfortunately has an uncertain future in my opinion. Not that Perl is going to disappear suddenly like coffee script, but as the old timers retire or pass away in the next decades, I can certainly see the language slowly "evaporating".

Perl is being migrated to Python. Two of the big banks I know have been running LLM tooling to migrate from. My last job was for a fortune 10 bank.

I personally learnt it at the age of 17 as the homemade switchboard for MSN Messenger bots were coded in it.

I'm 36 now and still not letting go. Something about the syntax pleases my brain. I am currently learning Erlang.
