EFreethought commented on Texas Instruments’ new plants where Apple will make iPhone chips   cnbc.com/2025/08/22/apple... · Posted by u/giuliomagnifico

Sure.. calculators and MSP430s for remote power meters are keeping TI from closing up shop, but TI doesn't have the capitalization structure to bring up a fab for the types of chips people say they want. I mean sure... If you want to make 28nm chips, they're fine, and you can do a lot with 1 and 2 GHz parts, but... We keep saying we want to make the chips in the states that they're making in Shenzhen and Taipei... And honestly, a $1.6B grant from daddy warbucks may not be enough to prevent TI from taking the money and dropping out of the program in a few years.

And this comes from a place of love... My family's been invested in GSI for almost 100 years

What does GSI refer to? Googling did not lead to any obvious results.

Slowly but surely, the jvm has been closing the go gap. With efforts like virtual threads, zgc, lilliput, Leyden, and Valhalla, the jvm has been closing the gap.

The change from Java 8 to 25 is night and day. And the future looks bright. Java is slowly bringing in more language features that make it quite ergonomic to work with.

There are still a LOT of places running old versions of Java, like JDK 8.

Java is great if you stick to a recent version and update on a regular basis. But a lot of companies hate their own developers.

EFreethought commented on Is Germany on the brink of banning ad blockers?   blog.mozilla.org/netpolic... · Posted by u/Vinnl

> We sincerely hope that Germany does not become the second jurisdiction (after China) to ban ad blockers.

Given the other restrictions on internet use in China, it should have come as no surprise, but I had no idea this was the law of the land there.

The idea that people in an ostensibly communist country are forced to watch ads is ironic.

Just want to point out that “old money” in the USA is a different thing than “old money” in Europe. The whole USA is only around 350 years old.
EFreethought · 14 days ago
Some of the American old money came from European old money.

The catch is “for the next year”. It’s going to cost us billions, just watch.

Is OpenAI making any money? I have read that they are burning money faster than they make it.

I think you are correct: We will see a big price spike in a few years.

At least one of my local, out of town, supermarkets doesn't have a warehouse any more.

It's all Just in Time, with a residual amount above the main shelves. If you can't find what you want, they don't have it 'out back', because apart from an unloading area, there's no 'out back'.

There was a brief period after 9/11 when planes were grounded that people realized JIT might not be such a great idea.

Why does society need to learn the same lessons over and over?

We have Lem

I am creating https://prizeforge.com so that I can escape from Emacs to Lem (among billions of other reasons)

EFreethought · 21 days ago
Why do you think you need to "escape" from Emacs?

Edit: If you are affiliated with the Positron that made the Elisp Repo Kit, then keep making more Elisp packages. I made a package for myself a while back, and erk was the easiest solution. Keep up the good work.

No because _you_ are in control. Not the AI.
EFreethought · 21 days ago
Maybe you do today. Will that always be the case? People running Windows do not have as much control over their systems as they should. What does enshittification look like for AI?

Why should I trust any of these AI vendors?

The real power of Claude Code comes when you realise it can do far more than just write code.

It can, in fact, control your entire computer. If there's a CLI tool, Claude can run it. If there's not a CLI tool... ask Claude anyway, you might be surprised.

E.g. I've used Claude to crop and resize images, rip MP3s from YouTube videos, trim silence from audio files, the list goes on. It saves me incredible amounts of time.

I don't remember life before it. Never going back.

Honestly, that sounds like malware.

I've long quit using vim on a daily basis, but the "how to exit Vim?" jokes are still somehow funny. A recent encounter was an old tweet by @iamdeveloper: "I've been using Vim for about 2 years now, mostly because I can't figure out how to exit it."

:wq (sorry, I had to).

I think sysadmins should install nano on servers for people to make quick edits. All the commands are along the bottom, so there is no learning curve.
