It sounds like a great idea. I did notice a carveout in the privacy policy for "if we get acquired, they can do whatever they want with any information" which seems... undermining, given how getting acquired by one of the worst data brokers is generally assumed for any successful social media startup.

The problem that the article is pointing out at least is that the free speech idealists don’t actually seem to have a vision to realize their ideals, and in many cases behave in ways that are counter to the absolutist rhetoric that they’re using to rally popular support for their new platforms or takeover bids.

But yes, ultimately the (U.S.) government is not able to tell businesses what content to moderate (or not moderate) because that would be a first amendment violation, so the only solution for people unhappy with current platforms is to migrate to new ones.

> But yes, ultimately the (U.S.) government is not able to tell businesses what content to moderate (or not moderate) because that would be a first amendment violation, so the only solution for people unhappy with current platforms is to migrate to new ones.

Migration is not what's best for society. The migration to silos creates thought bubbles, is a barrier to cross-pollination of ideas, and potentially creates extremist.

The ideal social network is a federated network with individuals selecting their own content filtering/moderator. It's possible for all nodes of the network to communicate, and the important responsibility of moderation is removed from the platform. Removing nodes form a network and adding them to a separate network (migration) doesn't solve anything at scale.

I concur with the core message -- that the current research on psychedelics is not strong. Some of the problem is that the research itself was not designed with an eye on earning FDA approval. This was hard to do because we'll never have a true double-blind psychedelic trial for psychedelics like we can have for SSRIs. Spravato recently showed a path for FDA approval, because ketamine treatment for depression closely mirrors protocols for psychedelics.

The author says > Quite a few psychedelic drugs are naturally-occurring, and have been used for hundreds of years (this doesn’t include synthetic ones like LSD, obviously).

LSD occurs naturally in the Ergot mushroom: > The ergot fungus contains a number of highly poisonous and psychoactive alkaloids, including lysergic acid (LSD), which was synthesized from the ergot fungus in 1938 by chemist, Albert Hoffmann [1]

What the author means is that it's synthetically made these days. Psilocybin can also be synthetically made these days.

psychedelics are the best hope humanity treating refractory mental illness. I know at least 5 people personally that have embarked on psychedelic voyages to treat their demons. Some of them are renowned psychiatrists.

The US Forest Service is just wrong on this. Ergot does not contain LSD, although it contains very similar psychoactive alkaloids. Ergot cannot be called a mushroom, it is a fungus that grows on wheat, rye or other grains/grasses.

Wouldn't this just be caused by Volvo committing ad spend on their own keyword?

I liken it to a defense strategy.

Imagine if they didn't, and a search for Volvo XC 60 showed an ad for a Subaru!

after_care · 4 years ago
If I search for "Volvo XC 60" then there is absolutely no doubt I want to see information about that vehicle. Any information about Subaru is just irrelevant noise.

I love that the article talks about realizing a "decarbonized grid" by storing energy in literal chunks of carbon.
after_care · 4 years ago
That's funny wordplay, but atmospheric carbo is clearly the intended implication.

> Considering how often antidepressants tend to be a hit-or-miss game (not to speak of side effects), I am a bit annoyed psychedelics don't get more attention for medical use.

Psychedelics are actually extremely hit-or-miss as well. Anecdotally, psychedelics don't always send someone in the right direction post-trip. If you scroll the comments in any popular psychedelics-for-depression post on Reddit, there are almost as many negative experience reports (including some long-lasting) as there are positive reports. The positive reports receive the bulk of upvotes, though, so you have to scroll down to see them.

Perhaps less anecdotally, any medical professional will see a non-trivial number of people with significant negative effects of psychedelics, from worsening depression to HPPD to existential crises or psychoses. An actual doctor had a great comment on the previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30995831

> HPPD

I've had some experience with HPPD but luckily mine went away. My experience ranges from 'oh that is pretty cool to look at' to 'this visual distortion is hurting my ability to focus on an important conversation'. I wish we better understood HPPD.

"6/9 of trucking costs is diesel. Like 2/9 is labor, with maintenance, tolls, and other misc. rounding out the last 1/9."

FTFY. Why would you used different denominators, this isn't an algebra test, it makes communication harder for no reason.

after_care · 4 years ago
I honestly didn't even notice the denominators were different. All of the fractions were in simplest terms, which is (imo) preferable to using a common denominator.

More specifically, they are protesting the wait times (up to 12 hours now), not the inspections themselves. These wait times are generally unpaid, I believe they get a single flat fee per border crossing.
after_care · 4 years ago
1. Why are wait times so long? Is there anymore we can reasonably do to reduce them?

2. How much would it impact the costs of goods to pay truckers an hourly wage during these downtimes?

You joke but I bet whatever software unions use to track member dues and involvement is in dire need of a 2022 upgrade. Everything from soliciting donations, text chains, to coordinating work stoppages. And charging SaaS-style per member makes perfect sense.
after_care · 4 years ago
Maybe we can encourage unionizing by generating a quality union management software package.
