> Because here’s the ugly truth: service is dead. The only thing still alive is the endless, humiliating upsell and self-service.

As I shouted "hear, hear" the author's substack blocked me from further reading with a giant Subscribe Now pop-up.

https://vim-adventures.com/ deserves a mention (as I see, it is already 12 years old, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5689971)

That’s how I mastered the basics of vim! Game still holds up today.

I for the life of me cannot understand why everyone just rolls over. There is no fight. Media, CEOs, Lawmakers, there’s no protest and no pushback. It’s insanity.

Too much to lose if you’ve accumulated a fair amount of wealth or power from the status quo. Who would expose their neck on moral grounds?

Huge respect for her. I consider myself a talented software engineer. I can’t get anywhere close to this accomplishment.

Genuine question: is she a once-in-a-generation prodigy? We forget this class of people indeed exists. As fellow professionals are we inspired or deeply ashamed of ourselves?

This looks promising! I help run local meetups for systems programmers [0] in cities across the world. We've been looking for a self-hosted RSVP system for ages (and haven't had the time to build one.)

We'll take Cactoide out for a spin for our September meetups! I'll open up some GitHub issues if any blockers show up.

The question is, does it actually earn enough money for the person to live off?
abnercoimbre · 6 days ago
It's an open question in these times, though there's a cohort of "artisanal" devs trying hard.

This has annoyed me a lot, crazy you can't rely on the print functions being the same on different platforms. This is why I always add stb_sprintf and make an allocSprintf() that allocates the right sized buffer first.

Anyone got a recommendation for a replacement? I'm currently using Warp and the history/context-aware autocomplete-on-meth is nice, but I don't use any of the new agentic features.

Self-plug: Still in early days, but I've positioned myself as the indie alternative. Terminal Click [0] is a 100% offline binary for Windows, Mac and Linux. I'm also blurring the lines between plain text and rich graphics. Zero AI is involved.

Consider subscribing to the RSS feed [1] at the very least :)

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been employed since 2019, got laid off 3 weeks ago. I’ve applied to over 70 jobs and not a single has replied other than to reject me. This is brutal.
abnercoimbre · 17 days ago
I'm sorry to hear that. I have close friends who are brilliant (and seniors) but spent 6-8 months finding a new job. Plan accordingly.
