a008t commented on Silicon Valley is awash with Saudi Arabian money   qz.com/1426370/silicon-va... · Posted by u/dsr12

From the article:

> Torture. Assassination of political dissidents. Financing terrorism. Civilian airstrikes. Oppression of women and religious minorities. Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights ranks among the world’s worst.

Not unlike CIA and military actions in South America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East (e.g. Iran Contra), and Guantanamo & Thailand, over the past 150 years.

At least with the CIA, arguably, the intentions were good. There are success stories, too - Japan, West Germany, South Korea.

As far as I am aware, the Saudi establishment is only out for themselves.

Some people also have luck with Magnesium L-Threonate
a008t · 7 years ago
Have you been taking it? What has been your experience?

Yep, Magnesium works for me big time. I take a powdered form which seems a lot more effective than pills. Still wake up in the middle of the night sometimes but can get back to sleep easily without my brain switching into overdrive.

Melatonin definitely knocked me out, but I woke up groggy feeling like I hadn't slept at all

a008t · 7 years ago
Do you take L-threonate or other versions? Have you tried stopping it - did things get worse than before you started?

I tried a lot of different things, went through paleo, high-protein, liquid vegan, standard, high-carb, carb-waves etc. You can't apply your limited experience to everyone else; it's like when I talk to a regularly-sized coach and they just don't get the issues very tall persons have to cope with and most of their advice is either misguided or outright dangerous (but would work wonderfully for their type of person).

I am 6’4 and thought it was impossible for me to gain muscle weight. Turns out I just wasn’t eating enough. Starting Strength + gallon of milk a day, and I have been making really good progress. Eating and sleeping are parts of the difficulty when training.

Travel?

That's the only thing that does anything for me.

a008t · 7 years ago
Same. I wonder if there is any way to recreate that in normal life?

I find that when travelling, I find myself excited to get up in the morning and I am quickly full of energy after waking up, motivated to do things. Not so in everyday life, even if I don't have to go to work / do anything during the day. Is it due to more sunlight? Better scenery?

It would be nice to increase the baseline to that state you experience when travelling. I definitely remember feeling similar / more powerful excitement and the feeling of being full of energy as a kid.

If helmets are in fact necessary, they should not be exempt. If they are not necessary, everyone should be exempt.

> Indexing is cheaper, yes, but that's because active management has positive externalities, and if no one will pay for it, those benefits will disappear.

Oh yeah? which benefits? When you know that on average, an astonishing 90 percent of actively managed mutual funds underperformed their benchmark indexes over the preceding 15 years. The index superiority was consistent and overwhelming.

I recently read the Little Book Of Common Sense Investing, and it was brilliant.

If nobody is actually analyzing the companies to discover their intrinsic value, stock prices will detach from fundamentals and we will see much bigger crashes than we ever saw before.

> I can assure you that you sleep well when you lift every two days, years after years

You can assure me, but it won’t be true. Source: lifted at least five days a week for years and was deeply insomniac the whole time

a008t · 7 years ago
Five days a week sounds like too much - if you are not able to recover between sessions, you will get symptoms of overtraining which include poor sleep and poor appetite.
