TedDoesntTalk commented on F-Droid site certificate expired   gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroid-... · Posted by u/kxxt

CRLs are becoming bulky, and OCSP have some privacy implications (telling the CA which websites you visit), plus most browsers are set to soft fail if there's an outage and the request can't be made instead of a hard fail and making the website inaccessible, reducing the security and usefulness of OCSP.

Short-lived certificates fixes these issues from an end-user standpoint.

Is it possible that one day certificate expiration will be a thing of the past?

I don't know if it's just me but in my case the problem isn't really the crypto bs, but rather Brendan Eich himself.

As much as Mozilla and Firefox can be criticized for both technical and non-technical reasons, at least I share the same core values. I don't seem to share any core value with Brave or its creator. Plus, yeah, still smells like Google :)

Brendan Eich’s contributions to computing are immeasurable. Your opinions of his social or political views don’t change that.

Do you not use Linux because you don’t like Linus? He’s quite a controversial figure. And before you say Linux is not Linus, the same can be said about Brave and Brendan.

Many other people work on these projects than just the leader.

Do you not use JavaScript because you don’t like Brendan?

>I've never felt impeded by loading speeds

I honestly think it's just something people here like to complain about. It's a complete non-issue. No everyday web experience is even close to being noticeably different. Full stop. It's almost like a meme, people say it because they think they should say it. I would ask those people that are complaining, what are you doing with all those extra milliseconds you claim you're saving?

> Second is people saying "I can retire early if I work hard now" I mean sure. Toil away the best years of your life when you have the most youth, beauty, energy and freedom so you can enjoy leisure when your body is aching and getting a good sleep is hard.

This argument always comes up, where we just assume one's "best" years are in their 20s and 30s, and people can't enjoy leisure at 60. My response is always "Make hay when the sun shines." I can accept you're probably at your cognitive and physical peak in your 20s and 30s, and I'd argue that's the time to max out your earnings, because you may not be able to when you're 60+. I look back at my 20s and 30s, and even though I spent most of them working and not really goofing around having fun, I wish I spent even more of them on my career and saving, due to compounding interest and investment gains. If I did, I might be retired already and spending 100% of my time on fun, instead of playing financial catch-up. Probably the worst thing you can do, financially, when you're 22 and just graduated from college is to take a gap year backpacking in Bali or horsing around in Ibiza or something.

In summary: You can have fun and/or work when you're young. You can also have fun, but might not necessarily be able to work when you're older.

Do you know how many “mights” and “may not” are in your post? A lot.

You “might” lose half your investments after working 16 Hour Days for 20 years to a divorce. You might get hit by a bus.

Nothing is promised except for this moment, right now.

Genetic code enables lizards to regrow their tails.

Future humans will be part human, part lizard, part zebra fish, and seveal other species. We will regrow teeth, heart, and limbs. Sometimes we might accidentally grow a tail.

WHAT? That was true even well into the 1980s.

Wikipedia says the international date line is “a cartographic convention, and is not defined by international law.”

The “line” wasn’t a convention at all in the 16th century so how did sailors experience loss of a day?

I like it, because it shows the author's aspiration. Not all software aims to be visually appealing, which is totally fine. But depending on what the software is, aesthetics are something that I find important.

For browsers in particular, that is a major reason why I don't use any of the existing Firefox forks: they are all very utilitarian. But I look at a browser window pretty much all day long, so I prefer a visual design that brings me joy.

TedDoesntTalk · a year ago
> I prefer a visual design that brings me joy

This sounds like a marketing-speak. Joy is not an experience gained by staring at the visual design of a browser. You are confusing joy and another experience, perhaps appeal or attraction.

If you genuinely experience joy from browser visual design, you are probably that same guy who experiences “delight” when a customer support representative treats you well on a phone call.
