It's also more than capable of running on other platforms via emulation, and there are visual tweak mods (increased draw distance, LOD tweaks, etc) that don't change the art style but make it far more beautiful than being limited to the underperformant Switch hardware.

interesting - i dont have a switch and dont plan to buy one, but would love to play the new zelda. Will need to look into this.

Interesting - happened to my sister in law and the account looked like it was hacked. New PFP and no posts.

> With Ethereum, Cardano, Solana, etc, your value is in the hands of where the developers choose to take the protocols. They can and have changed their monetary policies, and they will again.

The consensus mechanism has nothing to do with governance in most chains. Bitcoin and Ethereum governance is both determined off-chain through social consensus, based on what node and client software the honest users of the chain choose to run.

TacoToni · 3 years ago
Yup - typically referred to as layer 0. The ETH devs cant willy-nilly change the protocol and expect social consensus to agree. As a solo staker i also have the choice of which node and client to run (like you said).

Part of me feels like this is actually somewhat a feature. It's like a research implementation of an economy that iterates more rapidly than the current economy. What if the real value in all of this is finding out mechanisms to bake consumer protections, transparency, anti-money laundering and fraud detection into the main economy in an automated fashion?

Nothing to add here, but this is fascinating to think about. Thank you for this perspective.

A large chunk of my internet experience lately has been on web3, and the experience is _wonderful_ despite it's immaturity.

It's incredible to be able to go to different websites (Zapper, Zerion, OpenSea, etc.) and simply have all my data already exist -- without needing to create an account, export/import.

web3 makes me believe in a new era of the internet that isn't full of ads, cookie consent forms, dozens of sign-in services, tracking, etc.

An anonymous version of myself and my data exists everywhere. It's really a hackers dream.

TacoToni · 5 years ago
Yes - completely agree. it is refreshing to go to a website, hit connect, and boom there is all my data! I think we are only brushing the surface of what is possible with web3. Cant wait for login support to sign up for social media sites.

Reading through the FAQ on staking it says you will get penalties for being offline and the network eats through 800mb/hour which comes out to around 576gb/month.

Is this practical to do at home? Or are pools the way to go for people on consumer home internet?

TacoToni · 5 years ago
Great question!

The penalties for being offline are equal to the rewards you would have earned. It is okay to be offline if you have minor outage for few hours or if you're moving and will be offline for a few days. You simply would need to go back online for the same amount of time to make your rewards back.

I am a solo staker. My machine churns through about 800 gb/month. I am a huge advocate for solo staking if you have the hardware and have technical ability. I work in finance not software engineering, and i was able to set a machine up with no issue.
