I had a similar experience with DDG. I felt like I had to add “!g” to everything, which doesn’t actually move one away from Google, it just creates friction.

Kagi, however, has been a different experience for me. I haven’t felt the need to go to Google at all. If I can’t find it with Kagi, I’m confident I won’t find it with Google either. There have also been several times where I was on an outage call with a double dozen people all looking for answers to some issue. Everyone was coming up empty with Google, and I was able to find something that solved the issue pretty quickly with Kagi.

I had a mostly bad experience with Kagi, but I have to say I miss the account-level domain blocking.

After the deluge of spam calls I receive daily I'm somewhat inclined to opt for the opposite direction. No more phonecalls and just using apps for communication.

At this point I would like to be there. Telecom companies don't seem to care about spam calls much.

The code is GPL, but the official Oracle binaries are not (since Oracle owns the copyright, they are free to release under multiple different licenses) and they use Oracle's predatory "free" licensing - you când download and run for free for 6 months, but you owe them money if you keep running those binaries after the moment the new version is released. There is no explicit enforcement mechanism - it's up to you to be careful, otherwise their lawyers will notice at some point and bill you for all the times you weren't.

Oracle's OpenJDK binaries are GPL; the Oracle JDK has a better license as of a few months ago (v17): https://blogs.oracle.com/cloud-infrastructure/post/introduci...

I'm curious how executives like Meg Whitman end up constantly getting more leadership opportunities despite screwing things up. What am I missing?

I think he means the part where you have to pay to use JDKs older than 6 months, which means basically everyone has to pay.
Spinfusor · 6 years ago
Not true. You can use the OpenJDK for free until the end of time. If you want ongoing updates beyond six months, there are a bunch of free distributions: Azul Zulu Community (7/8/11/13/14), AdoptOpenJDK (8/11/14), etc.

> The new license makes it almost impossible to use Java without some form of payment to Oracle.

Do you have a source for this claim? It sounds a bit extreme, to say the least, and I had the impression OpenJDK was licensed using fairly standard terms.

Spinfusor · 6 years ago
It's mostly FUD: it's only relevant for the Oracle JDK; it doesn't apply to OpenJDK (or the other open distributions by other orgs).
